Another stereotype. I have in my garage 2 cars which are filled with Mobil 1 0W40. I have no oil cans at all.

The factory recommendation isn't different here. People just like to improve on the minimum required. You should if you're operating in severe conditions, but otherwise it is just another way to cherish a well-loved car. Unless of course you turn around and complain of the cost of oil changes. They you get two-fers. A chance to have quality time with your car doing your own changes, and a chance to enjoy belly-aching as well.

Looking at the amount of oil some people are putting in they effectively change their oil every 10k regardless!

I'm with ADias on this one. My 997.1 used a lot more oil than my 997.2. I've added maybe 3 qts total to my 997.2 (one very early around 1000 mi, then again around 6000 and 10000). My RS4 was taking a quart of Mobil 1 every 1500 miles or so...

I had a Boxster, 996 and now the 997.2 . All of them didn´t need any oil at all during changes.

I did and did a monitor session with the dealer. I was burning a quart at 800 miles. Dealer and PCNA says that is normal.

At 12k miles now I burn a quart around every 1-2000 miles depending on my driving style. So it's gotten better but still my 09 burns oil and my 2000-2001-2006-2007 did not.

After I am done with this Porsche I might try another brand....depends what is out there on the market but my mind is open.
