Default correct oil pressure on 997.2 S

Hi,

I noticed my 09 Carrera S oil pressure is significantly lower (between 2 to 3 bars of pressure with the engine warmed up and 3 to 5k rpms) than what I used to see on the 997.1 S. What would be the right oil pressure reading with normal temperature for both oil and water and at a given rpm?

Thanks

Perfectly normal, main oil pump is computer on demand, not engine, controlled to save power.
Here is a quote from the Porsche site:
"Four oil pumps remove the oil from the cylinder heads directly into the oil sump. A fifth pump in the oil sump directly supplies the lubricating points in the engine.
To reduce power losses and increase efficiency, an electronically controlled oil pump supplies the lubricating points inside the engine as and when required. This means that the oil pump does not work so hard when there is less demand for lubrication. The benefits of an on-demand oil supply system are optimum efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions."

Can anyone tell me what are the pressure values on a 997.1? Mine seems to be close to 5 above 3K a lot! Is it normal?

For the 997.1 cars that is entirely normal. (See the manual). The 997.2 design incorporates more of a on demand system that reduces the amount of unnecessary parasitic drag on the engine systems by (1) using an electric pump and (2) reducing oil movement to as needed.

Interesting system, probably one of the reasons (in addition to DFI) for better MPG.

Minimal effect on fuel economy. The real reason for the on-demand pump is to guarantee oil supply in high-g conditions avoiding oil starvation. The new system is a true integrated dry sump.

I just noticed the 5000 rpm last night and I'm glad that that is normal for a 997.1. What surprises me is that the 5k reading is at the max of the gauge so it seems like the car is running with the oil pressure too high.

nah, for the mechanical oil pumps, thats totally fine.

an electric oil pump makes me nervous

Oil pressure in the 997.1 is temp dependent, high when cold, also oil takes much longer to reach normal operating temp than the coolant.
The 997.2 computer control compensates for this with the pressure pump, it also has four "normal" scavanging pumps.

The 997.2 oil pump is not governed by engine rpm. On your next outing, eyeball the oil pressure gauge while accelerating. The oil pressure goes up UNDER LOAD, not by revving the engine while in neutral.

It was 8 years ago...doubt he even owns the car any longer.

I know this will sound like something is off or not right but my Porsche 2009 4S uses a quart of oil just about every 1200 miles. Yet it doesn't leak or burn oil. I don't know if anyone else has this usage but I'd like to know what your usage is for that type of driving.

Some threads on this subject exist in this forum, yours seems to be using at mid to higher end. Some use no oil but most burn some.
