Decoding your VIN: Each digit means something
I found this site that tells you what each digit of your vehicle VIN means:
http://www.vinguard.org/vin.htm
This applies to all vehicles being manufactured.
Take a Porsche VIN number: VIN # WP0CA29925S7XXXXX
The first three digits (WP0) tell you the country of origin and manufacturer
W=Germany
P0=Porsche
Next 5 digits (CA299) tell you the manufacturer's vehicle descriptor, in this case:
C=Cab
A=normally aspirated (?)
2=safety code (air bags?)
99=the first two digits of the model (third digit comes later)
Digit 9 is a check code generated by a formula
Digit 10 is the year of the vehicle, in this case, 5=2005
Digit 11 is the assembly plant code, in this case S=Stuggart
Digits 12-17 is the vehicle identifier section.
Porsche uses the 12th digit to finish the identifying job they started earlier. In this case the used "7" to complete the "99" that they used in the vehicle descriptor. So this car is a 997.
The 13th through 17th digit are the production serial number.

It used to be so much easier years ago. A friend of mine's 1973 911 Targa is VIN 9113111111. 911 for model type, 3 for 1973, the next 1 for Targa body style, and the last 5 digits for the serial number of that body. Neat number! All this changed around 1978-80.
