997 vs 996
I recently traded my '02 Targa for '06 S coupe and would like to comment on some of the differences. Let me qualify this by stating I am not a DIY guy and I don't track the car. I am an enthusiast and this is my 4th P car.
The 997 feels tighter, more responsive, and has an incredible sound. The navigation was slightly overwhelming at first, but is a nice feature. I miss Sirius and am surprised that the cars did not come equipped. The after market fit easily into the CD holder in the 996. The cubby on the '06 is smaller. I had never considered doing the short shifter mod on the 996, but I was mistaken. I enjoy the short shift, although it feels a lot stiffer.
I feel that my clutch engagement on a hill is much better. Is there some new improvement to hold the car on a hill? Speaking of the clutch 997 clutch is much softer. I love the acceleration going from 3rd to 4th gear.
This weekend I am going to program the garage door opener. I will also read the manual to figure out what the black button on the center console is. It may have something to do with a hard wired radar detector that was removed by previous owner.
All together a superior automobile. My first 911 was an '87 and I still remember the heat controls on the floor like a VW. The 997 has come a long way. Oh did I mention the red brakes.

Have you wondered that most 997 forum members already know that? You may want to post that on the 996 forum.

I found the comments quite interesting, thanks for posting.
The 997 is my first p-car. I almost bought a 993 about 10 years ago, but just couldn't justify it. Almost bought a 996 about 4 years ago, but decided against it, because I knew I really wanted a 997. Nevertheless, I love hearing about all the 911s of old - including the 996.
