Any specific info would be appreciated.
Send a PM to FisterD here on Rennlist. He mods 996 & 997 mufflers personally. He can probably answer your specific questions about the gauge of the pipes, the welding stick, etc.

Does the reduced back pressure reduce torque? Has anyone checked before and after dyno results?

No - it has no material impact on performance. The hack simply sends some of the exhaust through the bypass pipe instead of routing it through the muffler (which is at the end of the exhaust system). It makes the car "feel" faster only because it sounds wicked nice and you'll be tempted to hit the gas much harder to hear it.

I did mine 3 years ago

Default This is just awesome!

Hey guys - little did I know when we first started this how many people would find the hack so enjoyable. The best thing about this is that you get all the PSE sound for MUCH less dinero.

Also, with respect to the hack, make sure the shop doing the welding uses equivalent material - using straight steel will create rust problems pretty quickly.

Keep on hacking! And yes, the pics with the 2" pipes welded in are mine. 2" seems to be the best possible sound for the dollar.

Also important to note that the double bypass as pictured above is best done on a set of 996 cans. the internals of the 997 cans are different, and a single bypass is all that is necessary.

In this video, I'm running laps at Limerock with AWE Cats, Gundo Hacked cans and X51 headers - this is what I would consider to the be the ultimate setup. Turn UP the volume

Sounds nice, but maybe a little too much for a daily driver? I think the mod Bruce did sounds nice, but not too intrusive. Though still waiting to hear it from the exterior. How about a drive-by clip Bruce?

I agree, I think what Bruce did has a nicer sound. Very livable.

Gundo's sounds like he's running a straight pipe in comparison. I think some of the classic Porsche flat six sound is lost with this set up. Porsche spends big bucks developing an exhaust that makes just the right sound. This doesn't sound anything like my PSE.
IMHO of course.

And where the heck is that drive-by video Bruce? .

My 06 PSE was not quite that loud! Comparing to Gundo's video!

My Gundo hack is not that loud also (but it sounds sweet in that vid). Gundo's sounds like that because of the AWE cats and X51 headers combined with the hack. I'd say my car is on par volume wise with the PSE.

Matt - you are exactly right. That video of my car is the Gundo hack plus the X51 headers and AWE Cats. The AWE cats are indeed quite loud

Here's a drive-by with just the hacked cans:
