The numbers refer to where you can safely jack your car up from. Ideally #1, secondary #2, and finally #3. Of course, avoid the engine bottom always. I routinely use #2.

Glad to help. It helps to be a Porsche nut and a photographer.

Certainly one should follow the advice of the manual however sometimes we have to use a little commonsense and ingenuity to get around minor problems. Obviously, it's impossible to put 4 jack stands under the car at their proper spots without resorting to something like this method. The way I suggest doing this puts the least amount of stress on the car, and does so in the shortest amount of time--just long enough to get the rear stands in place.
