Hope this helpful.

First and second gears both have steel synchronizers for the Carrera. the GT2 and GT3 have steel synchros for all gears.

My current car is completely different. Very slick change in all gears. It's done 6500km now. From what I could gather the problem with the first car was not common but not unheard of.

I'd get it checked.
So, after the warranty gearbox change, you could feel noticeably smoother
shifts from 1st to 2d, even when cold?

It's not just you. I also notice roughness going from 1st to 2nd in my new 997.2. Sometimes it is so bad I equate it to gear grinding. Like everyone says, it does improve when warmed up but does surface once in a while to be annoying. Had 2 dealers look at it and they both tell me its normal. One even tried to teach me how to drive a manual....

I also have the sticky second gear when cold. Once the engine & oil temps warm up then it's like butter. I asked my service manager at the local dealer and he said it was normal but to keep an eye on it and he'd look at it the next time I brought it in for service.

This is not uncommon in our cars. In the latest issue of Car and Drover, they review the 991 Carrera and here is a quote from the article:

"Shift slowly to avoid a cringe-inducing grind during the 1-2 gear change."
