Default 997 C2 Problems shifting to 2nd

My first C2 w/17400 miles, I'm the 2nd owner; I usually rev match but sometimes 'blow' shifts into 2nd. Mosting from (when rev matching) 3rd, but blow some up shifts to 2nd. City driving only (not aggresive driving, <4000 RPM). I thought the seat was too far back, therefore not fully depressing the clutch, I moved the seat up a little but still not alway getting a 'clean' shift.
Is it me or the car?

You'll need to explain what you mean by blow shifts.

Wrong gear? Grinding the gear?

While I don't want to give the impression that I know absolutely for sure what is going on with your transmission. I feel fairly safe in saying that it could be that you need new synchronizers. Check out our website and I think that you might understand how that could be. We have a fairly good tech bulletin there.

The long and short of it though is that the carbon synchronizers in the Aisin Gear box are very weak, as are the shift forks, which have nylon supports in them that will wear out quickly. I would be happy to take a look at it for you if would like. I am not sure where you are located but we ship to most anywhere, so I am sure that we could work something out.

Happy to help, even if this is not quite what you wanted to hear. It is not as bad as it could be though.

Warmest Regards,

Does this occur after the engine/transmission have been warmed up?

I find the 1st to 2nd quite "tight" when the engine/tranmission
are cold on my short shifter. After it warms up, it's perfect.

"Blown" shift term from my old Kawasaki 1000 days, does not go into gear, hear and feel the teeth of the gear (starting) to grind. I quickly re-depress the clutch. Perhaps engine/transmission are not yet properly warmed up: I'm in the PacNW, this weekend it was in the mid-50's and only driving around town. I'll still getting used to this (new to me) car, I've driven it >130 miles, I thought that I wasn't fully depressing the clutch pedal; I moved the seat fwd.
I hope I don't but if I do need new synchronizers, it has the CPO warranty.

I thank those who have taken the time to reply.

The 997 cars have steel synchronizers -- read that in the literature. However, one must always wait for things and not just jam it in and go. If that's your way of shifting gears you have a problem and it will be a continual problem for you until you change. Most Porsche transmissions are bullet-proof until they meet up with drivers who abuse them. These things should go well over 150,000 miles without ANY work, so I suspect abuse. The CPO warranty will not cover abuse.

Trust me, I'm not jamming into gear, more like 'feeling it' into gear as I learn about this particular car. These are light to moderate engine speed shifts. Your very right that warranty will not cover abuse.

FWIW, I believe your knee should still be slightly bent when the clutch pedal hits to floorboard. You might not look as cool driving with the seat so close, but it's better that way.

I have difficulty going into first and second when the car is cold and my car has 6k mi (2008 911S). I dont force it in, I just try again until it easily engages. I had the same probelm on a brand new 09 911 S when test driving at the dealer and the salesman put it into second and directly into first and it went in. I suppose this is normal. I dont hear any grinding although I feel some roughness going into second. Any comments?

Man, you have a lot of miles on your '08.

It appears to be normal. I have the same issue with my '06 (8,000 miles)
when it's cold. Working with the pattern a bit and easing it into
first or second until warm is the key.

Some minor resistance or clunkiness is normal when cold. But missing a gear or grinding gears is definitely outside of any range of normalcy. That is a malfunction.

I have had 1st to 2nd problems when cold since I got the car. Multiple dealers have inspected and said normal. But missing gears this is not. That's not normal.

Just to clarify here. The 997 does not have steel synchronizers, except in the GT2 and GT3, which uses a completely different gearbox. The Aisin gearbox, which is what is in your street 997 uses carbon synchronizers, which have shown some premature failure.

Hope this helpful.

If its under CPO, just take it in. If its bad synchros then you will just get a new transmission under warranty.

My first 997 was very difficult to shift into 2nd when cold. Just baulked really badly but it meant I sometimes missed the shift and "graunched" the gear. The gearbox was replaced under warranty. It had done 10,000km (6,000 miles).

My current car is completely different. Very slick change in all gears. It's done 6500km now. From what I could gather the problem with the first car was not common but not unheard of.

I'd get it checked.
