Does 997 Qualify as a Supercar?
I realize the term "supercar" is used loosely. I personally hang on the fence on my 997.2PDk that does 0-60 close to 4 sec flat. I would definitely say the GT2 IS a supercar, same for the turbo. I think it is relative to what cars are currently on the market, so i would say sub 4 sec 0-60 qualifies as a supercar. Then again there are aliens like the veyron that really fuc*s with the bell curve. My friend with a Corvette Z06 thinks he has a supercar. What are some of your thoughts?
P.S. there is a magazine thats called Porsche Supercar which got me thinking

Interesting question. I don't know if there is an objective definition of "super car". I personally associate the term super car with both performance and exclusivity. I would think there are too many 997s for it to qualify. When I think of super car, I think of Ferraris, Lambos, etc.

its a super car but not a supercar. I agree with the above posters. Gt 3 and up along with exotics fall into the supercar definition IMHO.
Still the best all around car I have ever owned ( but I did love my 308GTB but not as a car that could be driven daily in my lifstyle)

Funny you should ask as I was just reading GTPorsche ("The Purely Porsche Magazine") December 2009 issue. An article about the 959 (page 40) titled, "In the Beginning" opens with:
"It was Car magazine's forthright scribe LJK Setright who is acknowledged as the first to term a car a supercar and it was Ferruccio Lamborghini's mid-engined masterpiece, the Miura, that he thought worthy as the founding member of this new and exclusive club. The terms and conditions for joining this new club might not have been defined, but it wasn't short of those wanting to become a member. Wannabes from around the globe wanted access, but for the first two decades there was just two protagonists who battled it out for the top honours of building the fastest, jaw dropping, expensive, striking, most powerful and totally impractical supercar possible and Lamborghini and Ferrari were the very best at it.
"The supercar recipe was a simple one: mid-engined - and a V12 at that - low, sleek, short on wheelbase, long on overhangs and a price tag to rival that of the average house two-fold."
Based on all of that I would say the 997, S, Turbo and GT3 are not. The GT3RS and GT2 probably are, in spite of having only half of the engine spec (cylinders).
Same issue has an article on the GT1 and another on the Carrera GT. All three (959, GT1 and C-GT) are supercars by any definition.

I have to agree that exclusivity and ultra limited production with silly performance numbers would qualify a car as a 'supercar'. All this said, I don't think you can use performance alone as a gauge.
GT3RS and GT2 would be the only current cars that would qualify. I don't know if I'd put the Turbo up there despite it's performance figures.
Either way, any 911 is the closest thing you're going to come without sacrificing drivability, durability and convenience.

No. It's a sports car, but not a "super car." I could never afford a super car. However, the performance of the 997 can and does easily exceed that of many "super cars."

Ha thanks for the thoughts guys. I paid over quarter million for mine in China, goddamn import/luxury taxes....to think to still be living in the states and to have a proper "supercar" (scuderia?) and a p-car as daily driver....drool.

Enjoy your car and do not worry about labels.
Since you mention that you live in China... How many Porsches do you find on the streets? I would think that your car is truly a 'supercar' where you live, and that should make you happy given that you are so stuck on labels.

i would say the 997.2 is borderline but still a daily sportcar... versus a supercar..
zo6 is not supercar, zr1 is and ford GT is tho... just like how a mustang ragardless of whats done or who's old guy name is signed on it will never be a sueprcar
