I did not get a plastic key w/ my new (1 month old) ordered 2010 S. Another friend w/ an '09 S did not get one either. Were they available before? What do they do without the transponder?

With the 997.2, the plastic key does not come as it did with the 997.1. I believe that you can get the key but will have to pay for it now. The plastic key is good if you take your Pcar and go swimming, surfing or any type of water sport.

It starts the car as well. There is a chip in the small head. I like it. I have it on a ring with my cell phone. Wherever my phone is, the key goes.

Sorry if repeating: Owner's manual says it's called a spare key, opens all the locks and starts the car.
Makes you think, is the big, huge, massive, pants-bulging, hair-trigger key we lug around just so we can operate hood and doors by remote?

Well, and so everyone who sees your keys knows you drive a Porsche.
Have you noticed how big keys have gotten lately from all manufacturers? We have three cars and I refuse to the put more than one car key on my key ring.
When I was a teenager still living at home (and one of my jobs was to keep the family cars filled up with gas), I kept the keys to three cars on my key ring and had no problem putting my key ring in my front bucket. I couldn't possibly do that now.
