Default PSE - Button Light Illuminates While Driving

The recent PSE post got me thinking about my PSE.

I had presumed this was normal, however, does the PSE
on/off switch light kick on (when PSE is activated) when
you are running through the gears at higher RPM's?

I assume this is put in place by Porsche in order to keep
the exhaust noise down at higher RPM's...

No. If your PSE light is flickering there is a problem. The only place the PSE kicks out is at a narrow speed range around 20 mph that is a Swiss noise restriction.

My PSE light does not flicker. It just lights up for a brief moment at higher revs
and then the light goes off. I have not looked at the speed when this
happens, only noticed the higher revs.

Should the light never come on by itself?

Absolutely not. You have a wiring issue. When you press the button at engine start it should stay on until you shut off the engine, or press the button again. Was the PSE installed by the factory?

Yes--it was factory installed. The window sticker has it as an option.

Perhaps this a basic question, however, my sport exhaust (louder) is on
when the light on the button is off. I presume this is correct;
which is similar to "captain's call" on a boat.

As Edgy01 said, the light is on when activated.

It is discussed in your Owners Manual:
The sports exhaust system can be switched on and off when the ignition is switched on using button A. When the sports exhaust system is switched on, the light-emitting diode in the button lights up.

When SPORT is selected the light comes on, and during the appropriate speed ranges, the exhaust is routed to produce a more 'sporting' sound.

Depending on which year your car is , the PSE light will be either on or off .
( with the '05 model , the PSE switch light is "on" when the PSE is off , and goes off when the PSE is activated .
I believe this was reversed with the '06 or '07 and later models )

You probably do not have a wiring problem.
The PSE (per factory installation ) is designed to "turn off "( bypass valves close ) when driving aggressively up to ~ 50 mph .
As soon as you back off the accellerator, the valves will open again ( loud)
Above 50 mph it will always stay on, regardless how hard you push the car.

Your light indicates the on-off operation of the PSE and will therefore also turn on-off each time the system activates or de-activates.

In any event, it's easy to check :
turn the PSE on and step on it , then release the gas etc.
Your PSE should turn on-off , and the indicator light along with it.

PS: if you want it loud ALL THE TIME , you can override the factory switch by just unplugging the orange electrical connector to the solenoid valve in the engine compartment

Now I'm really glad I wired mine in myself with a simple on-off switch. Most of the fun, for me, is being able to hear it when driving aggressively up to 50 mph. Otherwise, what is the point of having it?

I have no idea about what Rolf speaks. It leads you to ask, what is the default position, PSE on or off? If what he says is correct, then on the 05 models the PSE is on all the time, and only OFF when the driver presses the button to illuminate it, and silence the engine. This is not only contrary to its operation, but contrary to the instruction manual. I don't believe for a moment that Porsche changed it from MY05. I stand by my earlier postings.

For a 997.2, is the PSE supposed to automatically come on when Sport or Sport+ is engaged? I need to also select PSE in addition to Sport in order for the button to light.

And I stand by MY earlier posting .

1. In the '05 997's , the little orange light on the PSE switch ( dual exhaust symbol) is normally ON and goes OFF when the PSE is activated ( LOUD )
If the car had Sports Chrono, the PSE is active only when the Sports mode is selected ( no separate PSE switch )

2. In MY '06 the PSE switch light operation was reversed .

3. The PSE default position is OFF ( but what does that have to do with a light being on somewhere ? )

happy motoring

Here it is on my late build MY06 without Chrono Plus:

When the ignition is started, the light on the PSE is "on," and the
normal (quieter) exhaust is activated. This is the default mode.

When I push the exhaust button, the light on the button goes out
and the louder / sport exhaust is activated.

Yes, that's exactly how mine works. Aggressive driving switches it off. I've been trying to find out about this for a while, including posting questions on here. I recently had it in at a Porsche Centre for a service and asked the question about the PSE. They had no clue! Very hard to find any documentation on it either.

thanks
