Default C2S winter tires... Pirelli 240?

Hopefully some of you guys drive your C2Ss in the winter. I need to buy winter tires to put on my 2008 C2S and tirerack recommends the Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Series II , Front: 235/35R19 N1, Rear: 295/30R19 N1.
Are these good tires / the right tires ?
Thanks a lot

Who are you talking to at TR? I always consult with Luke. He's always been spot on with his advice and he also drives a 911.

I drive C4S and my local Porsche dealer recommended Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozeros as well. I've got 'em on at the moment (perhaps I was a bit of an eager beaver because the mercury is barely hitting the lows of 50s last couple weeks here in NY-Metro area) and one early morning when it was 39 degrees out, the tires def had good traction. I'm hoping for an early snow this yr or may have to drive out to the in-laws in Cleveland area to tool around in wet-snow.

My experience with the Pirelli is that they are an excellent compromise if most of your winter driving is on cold or wet pavement. They handle responsively. If we are talking deep snow and or frequent ice, there are better choices. I like the Nokian or Blizzaks for those conditions. OTOH on dry or just wet pavement a tire like the Blizzak WS 60 will be squirmy and steering response will be compromised. Everything has side effects

Porsche recommends the Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero, the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 and the Nokian WR.

I've got a set of wheels and winter tires for sale. Check them out in the classifieds.

Got Nokian WRs when ordered from the dealer. They ain't P-Zero's, to put it mildly. I imagine that they'll do better in the snow though.....

do you guys change your wheels as well or do you just switch the tires for winter? TR is recommending I buy a wheel and tire set for the winter, '18 inch, with less width. I currently have '19 Classics.

I use the Pilot Alpin but not in the sizes you show - I'm on 18 inch rims for winter. The sizes are in your owners manual. 18s give you a bit more cushion and narrower sizes give better snow traction.

I do change my wheels (kinda have to with the 18 inch winters and 19 inch summers!). This is far more economical over the long run, especially if you buy the wheels used. You will have very little depreciation in the wheels and no charges for re-mounting and re-balancing twice per year. Plus you can do the changes yourself if you have a jack handy.

I just ordered the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 tires/wheels(18 in.) package from Tirerack for my 09'C4S and it should arrive this week. I had Blizzak on my previous 06'E55 and it performed relatively well. If you own the car, it makes more sense to buy the wheels for the long haul. I did ordered my setup with the TPMS too. I wouldn't want to be caught with flat tires in our cold, snowy Buffalo winter.

The winter Sottozeros are excellent, this is my second season with them w/no complaints

Also have Nokian's on my A6 and they are by far the best winter tire i've ever had, but i haven't heard anyones experience w/the WR's

I have the Nokian's WR on my wife's Subaru. For the longest time we have proper snow tires but when her all-seasons needed replacing because of age, we replaced them with these all-season winter tires from Nokian. They are not proper snow tires despite the tread design and the M+S rating. We had proper Nokian snow tires and I had Blizzak on my BMW 545i and both of them beat the WR. Having said that, these WRs are better than all-seasons. We figure it's worth the compromise since we only put about 2,500 miles a year on the Subaru... I just bought a set of Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero for my 2006 997S cab in 18" setup with Porsche rims as well. I hope they are good for the snow here in Toronto.

I have the Pirelli Sottozeros on a second set of 18" OEM rims with TPMS on my C4 & they are fine for moderate snow & rain. My A6 has Blizzaks which are better for heavier snow, but a bit squirmy on roads that are snow-free.
