Its going in the direction of Helmet mounted visual aides in the military. The see through cockpit. One days no matter where you look you will see through the vehicle. All threats will be indentified and displayed.

FWIW, a tech I talked a about 8 months ago mentioned that the engine in the 997.2 had been moved forward significantly compared to the 997.1. (I can't recall his definition of "significant".) He seemed to think that while the 991 might not be exactly a mid-engine design, the rear end mass might still be moved even further forward.
