It's a philosophy really, driver involvement - turn on your own lights. Come on - there are easier and more luxrious cars out there. I for one think Porsche does a nice job of adding luxury but keeping the cars approx 3100 lbs and clearly on the sports car side of sports luxury.

Adding all the gadgety stuff (keyless entry, push button start, heads-up) would put them squarely competing with BMW - it's not Porsche's sweet spot.

Very presumptuous of you. I am not comparing a 911 to a luxo-box.

I never quite got it about the push button start things. You know they have these things called KEYS that you simply stick in the dashboard and turn a little to the right--and the engine starts right up! No other buttons to push!

I did not say you compared a 911 to a luxo-box. What I meant to say is that these days many want a 911 to have all the doodads a luxo-box has. And some even use a 911 as a luxo-box.

Auto headlights require an additional sensor, ABS and traction control require wheel speed sensors, a hydraulic control unit to pump the fluid and additional brake lines. Not to mention the long copper cored thingys that carry the electrons all over the place.

I drive sports cars. My new 997 (ordered w/o Bose, w/o motorized seats, w/o XM, w/o ventilated seats, but w/ LSD) is arriving this week.

If I wanted an overweight luxo 2-seater with lots of gizmos of questionable reliability, I would have bought a MB SL550 instead.

it's all on a spectrum people, GT3-ers consider these overweight. some thing full leather is silly on a "sports car".

it's all a matter of perspective.

Leather is not needed on a sports car but it is traditional. The post-war British roadsters had leather, not fabric or vinyl.

Should I assume you are not in favor of mandatory helmet laws which have saved thousands of lives? I guess including self dimming mirrors as standard equipment is totally over the top?

"There you go... you are equating a 911 to a luxo-box and not a sports car, and there lies the problem. I would rather have the cost of the car be spent on sports related characteristics.

Yeah, I know these cars are not bought by many people for their sports driving characteristics anymore."

You said a mouthful there ADias. I enjoy taking wannabe people out in test drives...and then scaring the daylights out of them after they start quoting 0-60 times and which is faster. After these so called customers exit the vehicle they usually put their tails between their legs and shut the heck up about magazine test numbers.

I am lean on options like other posters (e.g. no power seats, no Bose, etc.), but I dont think auto headlights is too much to ask for on a car of this price, and would prefer it if the car had them.

Also if you have auto headlights you can switch them manually if you like. That said, I accept the lack of this convenience as a Porsche eccentricity.
