I'm sure the purists lament the passing of hand assembly of the body, but by gosh, you've go to think that those robots make perfect welds every time, making quality improve.

I missed the damn thing! I recorded Both the Camaro and the Porsche episode. Then I realized I recorded the Camaro in standard def while watching it. So I canceled the record and it deleted the Porsche recording task. Luckily its on tommorow at some time

Anyone know what color the blue GT3 was? I know we have a few blue experts on here (Edgy?). I absolutely fell in love with that blue...oh, and the car drove pretty well too. This coming from a buy who normally picks gray and black cars.
Thanks in advance.

I watched it last night off the DVR (in Hi Def,...sorry Old Guy!). I really enjoyed the show.
Who knew that leather is cut by a 43000 psi water jet? Interesting.

Waterjet cutting technology has been around for decades. Typically used for cutting thin sheets of material to make intricately shaped flat parts, such as head gaskets. I've used them many times in fabrication. For tougher materials an abrasive is suspended in the water stream for better cutting action. Before the use of waterjet technology they were probably cutting the leather sheets with scissors by hand.

I didn't see the actual show but did catch the short preview online, and it looks a lot like Riviera Blue. It was a color that first arrived when the 993 came out in 1995. We're starting to see it in a few 997 P.T.S. cars.

When the cars were built "by hand" a guy went over the pre-primed body work w/ a glove and then came back to fill the imperfections with lead. The cars were painted by hand spray and touched up by hand as well. Overspray and the occasional run or bleed was not unknown. Custom orders could be delayed by months due to vendor delays or fabrication delays. Zinc body dipping came along in the mid 70s and the painting became increasingly automated, but by 1993 this hand made "cottage industry" process was so inefficient and costly the company was almost broke. Dr. Wedeking was responsible for the factory automation and JIT processes you saw in that documentary. Despite his (deserved) fall from grace, Porsche probably would have gone under by the mid 1990s or at least have been bought out without his efforts at a critical time.
