It’s ashamed that the early gen Cayenne’s are not up to that of the later ones and the 911’s. Yes they are in Leipzig and not at the original Stuttgart location but that’s no excuse. Driving hundreds of Cayenne’s old and new it’s pretty obvious that the latest gen is much better in the quality control dept.
Funny thing quality control old vs. new, my parents still have the same dishwasher in their home from when the home was built in 1972 and I am on my second one since 2001. Sure theirs is slower and louder but it cleans just about as well and is still going strong 27 years later.

How many people today plan to keep a car for 20 years? How many people keep their cars after the warranty ends? Why should a company build in quality necessary for long term use for short term owners? This just reduces profit and is lost on the new car buyer. Remember the manufacturer's profit is only w/ the first sale on a new car. Mercedes figured out that most of their buyers only knew the star on the end of the hood was a symbol of wealth and success, and that was all they needed to sell. I'm sure they sell more S500s today than they did 280SEL 4.5s in the early '70s. On a larger scale, the decline in overall quality of manufactured goods is due to multiple factors such as expanding consumer base by targeting lower sales price, high volume production to maintain employment necessitating planned obsolescence, and government regulations that result in materials and methods that result in less durability while meeting environmental and safety standards. Welcome to the Future.

Wonder if some of the cars are made by the old W Germany vs E Germany?

Leipzig is actually an old Russian Air base in the former East Germany. Panamera and Cayenne is built there.

sorry to go OT...
i wish i had a photo of the GE repair man hanging from the door to try to bend it back to straight. 3 trips for repair, no adjustment mechanism availalble.

back to cars, the fit and finish of my 99 E55 is the best i've had over the long term, especially the interior, but my 997 isn't old enough to comment.

+1. My 2002 E55 fit and finish is almost as good as the day I bought it. In 48K miles in 8 years and it feels like it can go another 8 years. My 09'C4S overall finish is very good but I do expect more rattle than my 02'E55 as time progresses. However I am impressed how tight and quiet the interior is considering the suspension is fairly stiff.

My 2004 40th has been remarkably reliable. Its literally 6 years old and looks brand new. Very few issues. 1 repaired under warranty. I hope my 2009 is as good My E46 M3 and my SL 500 seemed less well made than my porsche's - and more finicky.

Oh and my GE Monogram Fridge had an issue in the first 2 years of operation and my GE monogram ovens. Not super impressed but they are fine looking.

Speaking of refrigerator, my wife's overpriced Subzero had faulty sensor 4 months into ownership. So when you pay more it doesn't means you get more. Knock on wood, the Thermador oven and Wolf range is fine after 2 years of ownership.

Now...how much did this vehicle cost?...why has it never happened on my past fords, chevys, volvos?...3 babied years and 78k babied miles...hvac fan working when it decides to, rubber paint peeling from surfaces not to mention the carbon gear shift option lever...alacantra headliner detaching in places & sagging...and a month ago, back of the passenger seat completely detached?!...I know it's not a 911 but still a Porsche and I'm abit dismayed at the lack of quality and am unsure as to what to expect in and 08 or 09 model. I think " Porsche " and wish this away as an anomaly. All began at 52K mi. Any insight, comments? Posting here because Cayenne is going and 911 coming. Cayenne build date is 08/05. 100% garaged and in Florida. My dealer has been great with other items within the warranty period...all small stuff. I don't want repair,... it's going,...just abit concerned as to whats coming. Whats the honest concensus on 977.1 & 977.2 quality. Thanks all.
This is because it's really not a true Porsche. IMHO it's a modified VW. Too much VW engineering involved.

Guess you haven't driven in a cadillac CTS with the leather option. Your head will spin! (Oh, and the new buicks are better still...)
Let's face it that porsche is going to have to do something major soon....when you sit in a nissan 370Z and see stitched alcantara all over the interior, and a price tag at 1/3 as much, you gotta wonder where all the money went in the 997.....
