Prior to 2005 MB used (at least for a time) Lucas Electronics, supplier to the notoriously unreliable Jaguar line of vehicles. Since 2005 they have used Harman electronics.

Can you provide a link to substantiate that?

Lucas, the English prince of darkness? That's astonishing. I always thought the MB went w/ German Bosch electricals since the beginning of time!

Exactly. Doesn't make sense; Lucas, as the automotive electronics company, hasn't been around for decades.

Don't have a link to that but I thought it was widely known. Several people on MB forums reported Lucas branded parts in their car in the past.

Perhaps Lucas branded, but not the same company. The infamous Lucas company has been defunct for over a decade. The name was purchased at some point more recently.

No attraction to the Audi S6? When I think of full size AWD sports sedan it definitely comes to mind.

Good suggestion! Owned 5 Audis (including an 00 A6 and an 04 S4) before buying the 997 in 06 so I am familiar with the S6. V-10's get good mileage, right? ; - ).

The 216 is a solid car, as is the 221 S-Class. I'd buy one without any issue.

Love my 2005 S500

I recently bought a used 2006 A8L and could not be happier. Very well built car and drives beautiful and A8s are very well priced compared ti used MB. I would consider A8 before I look at CLS. I too think CLS looks a bit chick car. It never impressed me enough to seriously consider it as an option to replace my E320 wagon.

Another reason for A8L was the rear leg space. My kids will not ride in any other vehicle now that they are used to A8L

My wife drives a 2009 S6 V-10 and absolutely loves it. Gas mileage averages right at 20 mpg when not driven in sport mode. That's about the same as her former 2006 A6 V8 (non-DFI), but the sport mode is much more fun... Engine sound is fantastic as well...

Bad luck or poor quality...I don't know. I just know my wife's 91 300 SEL never had any problems even after 200k miles...sorry I sold it.

My 8 year old '02 E55 AMG has been very reliable and still seems to be going quite strong. Except the clock in my dash has areas burnt out where I can't tell the time anymore.
I'm like "what the heck, a fairly high-end car and they can't get the clock to last?" I would need to replace the entire dash pod (expensive), so I'll live with my wrist watch.

From what I've read about reliability of recent cars in general, Mercedes seems terrible. Even without the reliability concerns, there's currently no car in their current line up that interests me.

However, if I won the lottery, this is the one car I would want: The AMG SLS Gullwing.

Both BMW and Merc have had problems in recent years with electronics, my wife is on her second 7 series in 4 years, the first never had a problem, the current one has been in many times for electronics problems.

Actually, MSN autos reports 15/22mpg for the CLS550 and 14/20mpg for the Audi S6, that's not bad when you consider that the S6 is full time AWD so does suffer from a bit more drivetrain loss.

MMMM V10. That is all.
