I have 2 days at Daytona next weekend and I am going to take 6qts of oil just to be safe...freakin' unreal.

Again Porsche is no help, PCNA sucks, the dealer is confused and stuck in the middle....so I am going to drive the crap out of the car...I could care less anymore and hand them the keys to this oil burning, soot chuging POS in a couple of years and most likely never buy another Porsche again.

Now that they've finally sold all these '09s, they may get enough customer feedback to have to deal with it.

I'm still too low mileage I guess to notice any issue, although I have been through 1.5 quarts of oil already @ 2.4k/4mos. Most of that driving was pretty low-key break-in miles.

Just got back from a Panamera preview and was told by a rep that a recall is in progress for possible defective DFI injectors and we will be notified.
Hopefully this will answer our Soot issue??

Soot appears to be common on most DFI engines from VW/Audi and BMW also.

The only non-DFI new Porsche is the base 2.9 cayman/boxter.
I recently read an online interview with a main porsche engineer. He said that although all the new 997/987's use the new engine block, they made the the 2.9to get the most out of it without DFI, purposefully. He never elaborated why.

I assume that they wanted the base 2.9's to be non-DFI to help distinguish the higher performance models more. But now I also wonder whether they decided to "play it safe" for other reasons in the base 987 models.

I find this soot thing puzzling. I thought one of the selling points of the DFI engines was cleaner emissions.

Actually, it does make some sense. More power with DFI, but less carbon emitted into the atmosphere... So what happens to the utilized carbon? It probably builds up as deposits and gunk in the engine...it's gotta go somewhere.

The only time I do not get soot is when I am at the track. The car runs perfect and the rear of the car and exhaust tips are super clean.

May I suggest that we remove a little of the subjectivity from this. How about if some of the worst cases snap some closeups of their exhaust issue?

that reminds me of the break-in advice from a dealer in Pittsburgh: "Put it in third and drive to Cleveland."

im guessing they meant less emissions due to better gas mileage? cause my 997.1 pipes never got dirty... the 997.2 is so bad it goes on the white bumper making is grey after a week.

i think the reason why it doesnt do it when pushing it hard is as people said it runs way rich at idle and low RPM's...when idling i can watch my pcm average MPG just drop instantly... of course im not moving and engine is running but its real bad if you take the miles/mpg from driving... and then the new miles/mpg and deduct the first to get the amount of gas used while idling..

Back in the days when fuel was cheap I could actually see the gas gauge move down in real time when I floored the Camaro!
