Default erratic oil sensoring.

would think since they changed how/when the car checks oil level would be better on 997.2 but..

drove car 3100 since i got it.. checked oil occasionally and always had 2 or 3 bars in the middle area.. i.e. 2/3rd or 3/3rds..

the other night leaving dinner, lights flashing "low oil low oil" i cancelled message and came back on.. so i pulled over and whipped out my handy dandy extra qt of 0W40 i leave in the tool kit in frunk..

add .5

drove and checked.. still flashing bottom line

add .5

drove and checked.. solid bottom line

drove and checked... blinking bottom line

drove and checked.. 2 bars total, 1 in the "good" area...

drove and checked.. blinking bottom

drove and checked.. solid bottom

just added 600ml tonight.. and will drive to warm everything up and check.. but just weird how erratic the sensor is.. i would expect something very accurate for the porsche, i mean during filling ever other sensor in the car annoyed me "no seatbelt", "front open", "front partially open", "rear open", "tpms not found', "tpms checking", "gas low", "lights on". etc etc.. so it can tell me 500000 useless things but the most important, lubrication of the engine is still hit or miss?

.... i know others had the problem, but i just had to vent.

btw... buying this tonight for my half a qt so doesnt leak, but still leaving a full one in the tool kit center.. it fits there perfectly as if they know ur car is going to go thru oil like a ***** goes thru ____.

update, let sit 5 mins and checked again, 175degree's oil so good temp.. checked and exactly full after the 600ml +1qt yesterday

i guess 3100 miles in 50 days and only burned 1.6 quarts isnt bad... basically 1qt every 2000 miles.. versus some at 1qt every 600 miles..

i drive the car like i stole it, and most say the first few thousand miles are the worst, so lets so hope so.. odd thing was 2 nights ago i checked and it was "2nd bar inside the "ok" area" and last night it was "emergency low" so im guessing the sensor is just off, or my driveway isnt exactly level.

...hopefully my exactly full right now is "exactly full".. and not overfilled.. i guess ill either find out the hard way or wont find out at all... every post ive read says when they let the car sit and then rechecked it read "over" what it really was.. which is why i checked soo many times before adding the 600ml tonight..

yesterday it was either 1 bar or bottom blinking so i averaged the two and figured i was like 200ml over the "minimum" line.. figured theirs 400ml per line (i was told that between min and max was 1.2L) so adding 600 would put me to 800=2 bars inside the "min/max"

the car needs to just have a resevior and add/subtract oil as needed and we just fill the reservoir when its empty.

I suspect many are paranoid about adding oil. I think it is wrong to add oil when the display shows a deficit of 1 or 2 bars. I wait for at least 2 bars in successive measurements and then add

0.4x(n-0.5) in liters (or quarts),

where n is the bars deficit. The 0.5 factor in my formula is a safety factor to prevent overfilling.

Example: if I had 2 or 3 consecutive readings of a 3-bar deficit (n=3), I would add 1 liter.

1.6 low, especially on 997.2 made me feel bad. i think the 997.1 had like 11qt's total? but the 997.2 i heard was like half that.

Approx oil capacities with filter:
The 997.2 has around 7.5 liters and the 997.1 has 8.5 liters (1 liter = roughly 1.05 US quarts)

my readings are over the place. I am currently at 2 bars. I've been checking it daily. I have my oil reserve in the garage, but you're right about carrying it with you!

My 09 S PDK is the same. When I check the oil after full warm up at 200 degrees (oil temp) the oil check only counts down 4 seconds and the oil level is down to the first bar. My car has 600 miles on it.

If I shut it off and let it sit for 5 mins. then re-check it the oil reads full. It counts down for almost a full minute after the re-start. I don't know if this allows the reading to be more accurate or not?

I liked the system on my 06 better. I would always check it in the morning before I drove the car and the readings were always consistent.

My experience is that it always starts the countdown for 1 minute, when the car is stationary or restarted, it shows the rest of the countdown when oil measurement setting is activated. If the 1 minute is exceeded, it will show 3 or 4 seconds before displaying the measurement. If the temp has not been reached, it will say so and not display the oil level.

A quart won't hurt anything but I always have an extra in the bonnet. But like it has been discussed in the past; Just give me a DAMN dip stick!

part of the varying readings as you 'fill - drive - measure - fill -drive measure' could well be the car 1) taking time for the oil to all cycle in (didnt' say how much time you allowed) but I'm guessing more a case of 2) readings at different tilt levels in the car. perfectly horizontal = accurate. Anything out of level and the reading is off.
