18's look small on a cayman, they would look even smaller on a 997. I definately wouldnt go smaller than 19' unless its for track or snow.
If your leaving the body stock I would do 19's. If your lowering it and doing a front spoiler and side skirts I think 20's look better. But I can see how most dont like them simply because of the ride quality. On the Turbos i have driven both and didn't really notice a difference.

When I'm driving I have no idea what they look like. I can certainly feel how they drive however. If I didn't live in the place with the crappiest roads known to man I would love 19's. My consideration to go 18's is purely driven by the amount of potholes we deal with around Detroit.
You really want bling to put 20" 's on a 911. Certainly no justification from a driving dynamics standpoint.
