Here's my Optima install, same plate as on the 997:

Any BCI Group 94R battery will fit. I just installed an Energizer (made by Johnson Controls) into my 07 C4S today. Perfect fit and vent tube intalled directly into new battery. New battery has 765 CCA and 956 CA rating so it cranks much better than the previous OEM battery

46.3lb, ouch! Short of an Optima isn't there something lighter?

My car is a 2006 with a production date of 12/23/2005. Until today the battery was the Moll factory original. When I went to start her up this morning it was "Anejo and lights a flashing". Every instrument gauge & light were going crazy so I quickly popped the hood & pulled the key out. The old Moll gave up her last bit of voltage.
Two hours later I installed a Sam's Club Energizer Battery group size 49 for $82.28. Since this battery was a little bit longer I had to install the clamp on the last hole in the tray. The hole is not threaded therefore I had to place a stainless steel washer and nut (m8 x 1.25 mm) (w/Blue Loctite) under the tray in order for the bolt & clamp to thread into.
When the car was restarted some of the instrument lights (ie: PASM, ABS) were still on & the clock & radio were wrong. I turned her off & restarted & drove around the block & everything was reset except for the driver's window. Driver's window reset was a simple, hold down the button for 10 seconds & she was as good as new.
Possibly my only warning of a potential battery failure was this past week when I would turn the lights out on the PCM unit it would come back on after 2-3 minutes. This would happen 3-4 times after I first turned out the lights. Now with the new battery in (and as in the past) when I turn off the PCM lights they stay off.
I've been an avid user of a battery maintainer & a distilled water re-filler so I can't complain about the five years that the Moll lasted.

If you sneek into Wal-mart, you can buy a 1000 CCA Exide (WM calls it something else) battery with vent and a 3 year warranty for $78. Yes, you have to use the outer most battery clamp hole and supply a bolt but no biggie, took me less than 10 minutes to install. Trust me, I'm no mechanic, but wasn't about give anyone a couple hundred bucks + to supply and install a battery.

I think I like this battery, when my OEM finally gives up the ghost (maybe sooner)

buy a 94R battery (same as Interstate H7), which is a direct fit replacement. Aftermarket sources list a group 49 battery that is longer requires you to play around with the clamp bolt. 94R is a common battery for Mercedes and Audi cars and even some Chrysler vehicles during Mercedes ownership.

Yeah. I guess. It's nice. OTOH, Be sure to check out the latest developments in fruit-based and recycled throwaway battery technology.

I have a 2003 996 C2 and replaced the stock Moll battery with the Interstate H7. They both weigh the same (about 46-47 lbs). The H7 fits perfectly.
In addition I have an Odyssey 925 that I use in the summer and for trackdays. It is 27 lbs including a Rennline bracket. It seems to hold a charge well enough despite its small size: measuring with a voltmeter it loses about 50% of its charge after 8 days parked in the garage with the alarm on. But it can take a 2amp float charge and be back at 100% in less than one night, so its completely liveable if you plan ahead. In normal stop-start driving it is fine as long as your alternator works... although I admit it is comforting to have the H7 waiting in the wings just in case.
