Default My 997.2 engine difficult to start

Today I got a nasty surprise when it took me three tries to start the engine. Each time the engine was cranking fast, so it's not a battery problem. But the first two times I cranked about 2 sec before stopping, thinking what went wrong. The third time I just let it crank, and after about 3 sec it finally sputter to life. This is so surprising to me because when I first got the car, it always amazed me how fast the engine caught when I started the engine, usually within 2 cranks.

I actually start seeing this slow start problem 2~3 days ago, always at cold start. After I got home today, I turned it off, let it sit for a min, and started up the engine. No problem there, just it takes longer to start, compared to when it was new.

My friend suggested it could be bad gas, although I always get Chevron 91. Has anyone with 997.2 experienced this problem?

Was the engine cold when it happened?

Long cranking is one of the signs of HPFP failure. I had it before my pump went. I suggest you have your dealer look at it.

Ugh. I hope HPFP failure does not become the RMS or IMS of the 997.2.

Sounds like HPFP failure. It is an issue on earlier cars and there's a fix. I would have it fixed ASAP and i would not drive it in that condition.

no, had just driven like 15 miles and ruined my car with clay, parked in garage to clay and needed to move.. was off for an hour, went to turn back on and thats when occurred..

my car is 2 days old btw, so ive only started maybe 10-12 times... we'll see tomorrow whats what with it starting.. hopefully a fluke.. HPFP problems do not sound fun, especially when my local dealer gives out jetta's as demo's...

Ok, tomorrow morning I will check it again. If it persists, I would take it to the dealer right away. Sigh...my own feeling is that this is not good. I hope I don't need a tow truck.

If your dealer has the parts they can perfrom the repair in a few hours.

The long cranking was intermittent until the day the pump failed, the problem is once it does the car will go into limp home mode and although you can drive it you won't want to. I made it home but was towed back to the dealer. Long cranking is also a symptom reported by many on BMW forums before their HPFP failed.

Maybe related or not but we never had any problems at all with our 2008 Cayenne S which was one of their very first DI motors. Had the car 2 years now.

The car started fine this morning, 3~4 cranks to get it going. Took the car out and had lunch, and did not see any problem. Since local dealers are closed on weekends, I will keep it under observation.

The issues with the RMS and IMS were intrinsic engine design related, hopefully the pump failures are a part manufacturing problem or at most a design flaw for the part which can be remedied w/ far greater ease than RMS/IMS.

My 997.2 C4S does this 2500mi, I have a 06 Cayman S as well, which did the same thing, had to have the fuel pump replaced.

sometimes, I hear a loud 'spark' when my engine starts, but it started up just fine today since I had not driven the car in 5 days! I hope the spark isn't a sign of things to come.
