Follow the manual. You can't go wrong. The car is over-engineered in every way, so believe the engineers who designed her.
Unless you are one of these low mileage guys, who is looking at getting through the break in period sometime during President Palin's second term.

What is your objective with breaking in your engine? Long uneventful service life? I assume that is all you seek. I followed the break in regiment to a T, and wound up putting a quart of oil in every thousand miles,--and still do, some 38,000 miles later.

My objective is a measurable exercise in patience, since I tend to be very impatient - I need the practice. Beyond that...a "leap of faith" following closely by a "what can it hurt"?
I'm pretty sure my manual says to expect to possibly add oil regularly and I don't think it mentions the break-in process affecting this.
But I'm new to Porsche ownership - is a break-in process taboo and just for geeks?

Testing an engine at the Factory is not breaking it in. These are relatively short tests to make sure nothing is really, really wrong. I am breaking my car in by the book. It taxes my patience but I feel it is the best chance to have fewer problems down the road ( e.g. 80,000 miles) and, perhaps, lower oil consumption. My car is intended as a "keeper".

Just like I did when I bought the TT
Just like I did when I bought the 996 GT3
Just like I did when I bought the 997 GT3
So since I am KEEPING IT! I want a long nice service life with no mechanical failures!!

OG,
Both of my 997s driven under 4200 rpm for 1000 miles and then I went nuts. Both ran/run perfectly.
Do what Brian said,...ROAD TRIP. I drove 600+ miles of backroads in one day going from Boston to Lime Rock to NHMS!

I noted this elsewhere, but I've been following the break-in except for a few bursts over 4200, but the car is 'loosening' up after 1150 miles now. I am on vacation this week and drive the car as much as I can. I am going to drive it to the NC mountains next weekend, hopefully, I can get close to the 2k. But, I am going to have the oil changed by my indy after the 2k break-in.

When I did the factory tour two years ago as I remember, the engines were run twice during production:
Dyno testing, to check power was within spec, some knocked out for being above spec by the way
At the end of production, still clad in protective plastic, the cars were driven on the road for 20 minutes by production workers.
Assume lots of short trips then follow during transportation prior to delivery.
The ROW models also have the recommended break in period for 3000 kms (2000 miles) in the manual

Paul - when do I get to see your new baby? Get some pics up buddy!
I just got my last pcar too! (
)
I took it easy with the TT for the first 2,000 miles, even waited a little longer before I really tried it out. I do believe in varying revs while driving, and after 500-1000 miles I am not paranoid about hitting 5K revs now and then.

Jim Just let me know so we can hang out!
I was going to get a TT but I thought since I had one already that maybe
I should experience the purity of the C2S since I havent had one yet.
The test drive sealed it. I am going to be in Marina Del Rey on Friday
Wanna hook up?

In 1993 I thought I had bought my last Porsche. 14 cars later, I am planning the 15th (secret), 16th (Panamera/Cayenne) and 17th (RS), they may not happen but they are a gleam in my eye.
Let me respectfully suggest to you young 'uns that you really should be focused on the Porsche you shouldn't "sell" instead of the last one to buy.
My only regrets are the cars I sold, not the cars I bought. Once a 911 "driver" always a 911 "driver" (even if you stray), and if you are a poseur you are probably not on this site.
What better passion as a hobby to pass on to your kids (and friends) than Porsche passion?
The current 2009 997 S is going to go down as one of the all time great cars from Porsche.

I've always done somewhere between the two, gradually pushing more towards your option B as the break-in period comes to a close. I may have misunderstood but I'd heard that 997's sold in Europe don't have the break in period specified in the manual - and if this is right, it confirms the suspicion that the North American break in period may be more of an attempt to limit early warranty claims rather for any real engineering reason. They all come off the same production line after all.
But I don't believe that is enough not to look after it in the first few thousand miles / kms. Load it up without stressing it to bed the rings in, make frequent gear changes etc etc.
I like the "take it on a road trip" approach. What better excuse!

Nice words Pogue. Those are ones to write on the garage wall.
Now if my two sons would somehow grasp the idea of education (they are the sons of two scientists)
they may get the jobs they need to BUY something else besides a used boxster. Then I could pass on SOMETHING!
