The most important thing to remember as a Porsche owner is that there will always be envious jerks out there who will never own a Porsche because they're afraid of what other people think about them. While we are concerned as Porsche owners about how other people feel about us, we realize that we're driving one of the finest cars on the planet, no matter what the age of our Porsche. That is why Really why Porsche owners wave to each other as they pass by each other. It's kind of funny because the very same envious jerks spent more money on their new cars than I have on my used Porsches, which have ultimately outlasted their newer cars. There is no shame in owning one of the finest cars on the planet.
There is another crowd though who do not own a Porsche but appreciate what fine cars they really are. These are the people who I encourage to work towards the goal of owning a Porsche. I have never once had the urge to fall asleep at the wheel. That's how fun a Porsche is to drive! So just smile and let the eyes of the envious jerks burn on you...They are stigma. And get a camera to catch the eggers. They should have to pay for a new oem paint job

Yeah, the OP probably already made up his mind about a Porsche purchase.

I only read the first page. Pompous little dude bought his 997 in 2009 with a line of credit. My guess he lost his job, had to short sale his house, and now lives in his parent's basement. The Porsche is surely long gone, but at least his friends still like him...

Would be cool if folks chimed in some years later to give us the long view of how their decision turned out. I should go find my "Intro" thread, and update it, but I think it's pretty obvious that 2.5 years in, I'm still loving my 997.2S!

A little searching and he is still lovin his 997.1 c4s , has made over 5000 posts at close to 2 a day. Unfortunately I had to wait till I was 54 to get my 2011 but then again i just financed it from under my mattress. Will be nice when he chimes in after 7 years of ownership as to how he feels now at 38. Cheers , and you only get one chance at life.

Nonsense! The OP (Alex) has long been a contributing member to RL.

Why so angry? Are you saying it's wrong to finance a car?

It never occurred to me.

I thought that Porsche ownership broke out as follows:
911 vs the rest (except those in a Boxster or Cayman looking to move up to a 911)
air vs water-cooled
purist vs modifier
driver vs status

As to the whole rich guy thing, I've just pointed out that my car looks 'new' because I keep it clean and it almost certainly cost me less than your brand new mass market Audi Q5, BMW 5er, Toyota LandCruiser etc. or whatever that you just bought new/leased.

That must have been one lumpy mattress.

Not angry at all. The OP said he bought it with a line of credit in 2009. There's a 99.9% chance that came from a HELOC on his home in a time when almost everyone was using home equity to finance vacations, cars and other toys.

Glad he still has the car. I just wonder if he still has the house...

Yeah, there was no such thing as a HELOC in 2009. If you recall, most banks were being bailed out by their governments at the time. Real estate lending was at all time lows.

I had an open HELOC, that I never used, until 2011. That's when BofA abruptly closed it. I didn't really care, since I never used it. Of course it was cheap, "just in case" money.

Sorry for taking this necro thread down another track. My apologies to the OP for my generalization about his finances.

However, the whole concept of the original thread was stupid...

My brother tells me my 911 is a low end sports car, he's not being rude he's just "telling the truth". He drives a Honda Accord.

As long as he doesn't drive a Corvette and refuses to wave at you, you're fine.
