I routinely go into mountain country and skiing in other states. I also used to live in serious winter areas. I keep a set of snow tires (not winter) for each of the cars for ski outings. The Michelin Alpins are great tires, particularly on rear wheel drive vehicles,--with engines in back!

Our local winter weather is pretty much a joke. In 40 years it got down below 32ºF ONCE on my property, and that was briefly on a winter morning within the last year. (Global warming you know).

I am currently looking at getting a C2S or C4S as a daily driver. Never had a rear engine rear drive car. My current DD is an 01 S4 and it is fantastic in the snow with Blizzaks. We get a fair bit of snow here in Nebraska but not a lot. Is the 4 worth the extra complexity and cost for snow performance, assuming of course that I get snow tires for either. I add that I did once have a 91 318is and even with snows it was a bit dodgy for my taste - not enough weight over the drive wheels.

So long as the snow depth is not excessive, you will be invincible with 4 snows on it. Even the 2WDs are invincible with 4 snows on them. Only advantage to a 4WD in snow is starting up, and having a bit more weight over the front tires.

Thanks again - I just need to know which wheels will fit, which spacers, what size winters, etc. I am 99% sure it'll be a set of Porsche OE Carrera IIIs or the Carrera IV wheel in 18". FWIW, I drove my C4S in snow the day after I bought it (we had 70* on Sunday, snow on Monday) and it was fine, even with summer tires (BS RE050As). I know not to trust that, but I can say that after the experience that day, the C4S with winters will be fine year-round.

Ask Dave (Coochas) how he configured his C4S for his Boston snow.

Get a second set of 18" rims and tires and just get spacers for the rears.

That's what I'm doing - ordering some 997 Carrera IV wheels w/TPMS sensors, Pirelli SottoZero Serie II winters, and H&R spacers. Thanks!!
