Default Listen to XM through iPod Adaptor...

I'm not sure if this is a repost, but I discovered something new this morning. I downloaded the Sirius/XM iPhone App and activated the 7-Day trial last night. I thought, if we can play music from the phone, why wouldn't it play music from the App as well.

So I plugged in my iPhone, selected AUX, clicked the Sirius/XM App, selected my station, and off we go! I can't believe it actually worked!

I have XM in my car, but for you guys who have the Universal Adaptor AND an iPhone, you can play sat radio in your car. The only drawback is that the adaptor does not support iPhone 3GS so you can't charge the phone while connected. Apparently Apple changed the connector pins in the new phones.

Very interesting!!

BTW late deliveries come with the appropriate cable, or you can get one from your parts dept. (20% off is still good thru the end of this month w/coupon)

The cable design is strange since both the USB and DIN plugs must be plugged in at the same time to charge.

Sure. XM is just another app on an iPhone. Same for FlyCast and Pandora, perhaps even better choices for Internet radio than XM...

No doubt. Native NAV and satellite in cars become obsolete with new types of client-platforms all the time. I never buy a car w/ NAV.

Will this tomtom app have a monthly fee attached to it?
I wonder how much it will cost?

This announcement (see HERE) refers to two products: software application and car mounting unit.

You can see from that apple video, one issue that car manufacturers have to deal with - how to integrate the video screen from the phone into the car's display. Bluetooth solves the audio link problem, but how do you get your phones smallish display to instead be shown on the cars larger display unit.

But for sure, the car itself doesn't need a cell phone (we knew that), doesn't need satellite radio electronics, and soon won't really need a native nav system. But what it does need is a better integration system for the phone. I don't want to stick my tomtom iphone on the windshield, I just want to enter the car with the phone, and as with bluetooth, just have the video screen from the phone appear on the car's display.

I guess IPhone 4 will have that.

Be careful on the iPod touch - WiFi yes, 3G no.

So, it will work in your garage and maybe your driveway. Once you lose your WiFi your done.

Cool on the iPhone though!

OK, sounds great. But explain to me how XM or Sirius via iPhone works in rural areas since you're getting the signal, I presume, through your cell connection instead of via satellite. Also, how good is the sound quality?

PS, I just checked the reviews at the App Store, and most are pretty lousy. I think I'll stick with my Roady2 and pick up directly from satellite.

Absolutely iPhone not iPod touch. Good catch!
