Default total engine stop: faulty cam sensor?

The dealer tells me that my recent total power loss and complete engine stop was likely caused by a faulty cam sensor.

Possible?

Seems far fetched to me.

Could be. I dealt with an interesting issue when I had my E55. I had had the car about a week and sitting in bumper to bumper traffic (REALLY hot day) went to move and nothing happened. Looked down and the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and the car was off.

Turned the key and started right up. Figured I must have "done something" and forgot about it. A month or so later, same thing - really hot, stop and go traffic. Brought it in and there were no codes thrown so the dealer really had no clue.

It went away for a while and did it again. It got to the point where I could tell it was going to shut off. The car just felt different. Fortunately, it never did it while the car was moviong. Reading the AMG boards it seemed as though some other cars had the same issue. They called in a regional tech and replaced the cam sensor. It seemed to do the trick.

Is your car throwing any codes?

Edit - I just read your post about this. Like I said this never happened to me when the car was moving and I never heard a thing. Would look down and the dash was lit up

E55,

thanks for the info.

I was moving at around 70-75 and it was early morning. But my dash certainly did light up. I emailed dealers for codes but have heard nothing.

regards

I had the sensor replaced on my 997.2 C4S after I received a reduced power warning and a check engine light @ 800 miles. It didn't shut the car down though!

Looks like the cam sensor is not the issue

...just got a call they have been authorized by PCNA to pull out the engine to try and determine the problem.
