Here's what I don't get whenever the C2/C4 on the track question comes up. Porsche's two track cars, the GT2 & GT3 are both 2WD. Doesn't that pretty much answer the question.

Ron's answer below is appropriate - search is a great friend.

It would be easier for me to just say "Get the C2S, it's a better balanced, more fun car on the track - you don't need AWD unless you drive in the snow all winter long", but then you might not learn about the search and just how deep the knowledge base here is.
On the second question, look for threads on 06 updates and so on. Many guys on the forum know these cars inside out and there were some minor updates in 06 which they have posted quite a bit of information on.

Is there a restriction in what class they can race in depending on RWD versus AWD?

Yes they kicked AWD drive out in the 90's since Audi kicked *** even with extreme weight penalties.

So with everything even NOT being equal (heavier car), the AWD will dominate similar RWD cars on the track?

I get your point and it makes sense to a certain extent but is the decision really that cut and dry? Where do the improvments to the 09+ AWD system factor in, if you're only cross shopping a C2S/C4S and the GT cars aren't an option?

No, the better driver in either will dominate.

AWD can be made to perform very well on the track. OTOH, inexperienced drivers can develop a lot of bad habits from an AWD set up. The only concrete statement that can be made re RWD/AWD is that each will have a different "feel" to the driver. Hence, the personal preference expressed here and in the back-posts RonCT alludes too.

To the OP's question of "Which is better around the track?", the only answer is 'the one you buy and learn to drive well'! All else is academic

in general, AWD P cars tend to understeer more than RWD P cars,
however an aggressive alignment can significantly mitigate the understeer in either variant.

which is faster on the track? depends on who is driving.............

Porsche can ONLY run RWD.

+1. This post nailed it. This question has been debated since the dawn of the internet - hell, make that "ftp" sites...
