Default Did your 997 overheat ?

Did anyone ever have a 997 S overheat at the track ? Not the water but the oil.

grappa, there are some fairy recent threads on oil teperature rising while on the track.

the last de i did the oil temp was as high as 240-245. IMO much too high. It normally runs at 200. I was worried and didn't do the last run of the day.I went home and changed my oil from the Mobil 1 pond scum to Amsoil european blend. this may not matter, these engines shouldn't be running that hot. Next it's an aftermarket oil cooler.

Definatly get that burnt oil out of your engine! WHO CARES WHAT THE INTERVAL IS..

Cars run hot at the track. If they don't, you're not driving properly. My cars have routinely gotten 30-50 degrees hotter while on the track. Porsches temps fluctuate much more than other makes.

You're fine up to 260 or so, and so is Mobil One. Actually, the oil is good beyond that, but it may be realistic to have some engine concerns at that level.

Those are typical track oil temps. They could actually be higher.

Reduce your coolant temps and your oil will follow.

Unless there are operating reasons that so require I do not think that lowering op temps makes sense. Modern engines and oils are designed to run hotter than older designs/oils.

Yeah, I guess it's everyone's desire to give up power and protection unecessarilly when they are at the track.

260 on mobil 1, maybe the old stuff.

In the late 80's I burnt an engine on the track. Blown head gasket, lost all coolant, had to keep going to finish the race = engine running on oil "cooling".

The smell when we opened the engine up was diabolical - filled the garage with a rank, putrid burnt odour that hung around for hours. The engine was totalled stuffed as you can imagine, to the extent that the cams (it was a DOHC 1.6 Alfa) were blue. Very sad.

Point is, even when it's very very hot oil still lubricates. Doesnt work very well as a coolant though.

But of course this is a bit off topic and I'm not suggesting anyone try it!

Maybe the PDK caused the oil to overheat. Probably why it was shifting wonky after about 6 laps.
Do we have a PDK overheating problem or am I just an unusual case? The weather was about 88 degrees and the humidity also about 88. I love the trans but...

i believe last year or the year before in an ALMS race Hentzler or one of them puked the radiator and won the race with oil-cooling alone.

i've seen 275 on really bad track days. my Z06 went crazy with warnings at 260 and actually cut power once.

What does a PDK have to do w/ oil temps? You can use a PDK as a manual, therefore the engine should have the same temp performance as using a manual.

I know all the hype about the PDK and it's probably well deserved,but I have to believe that the added complexity and additional moving parts create some drag and heat. Frequent shifting also has to heat up those clutches. On a track with longer runs the PDK might be OK while a track with more turns and shorter straights could cause higher temps.
