It certainly helps prevent curb rash when parking against a curb. I only use it for that purpose or when backing out of the garage and I want to make sure I don't come too close to the door frame. Most other times it's turned off.

I'm sensing a 'eureka!' moment here; you mean THE PASSENGER MIRROR TURNS DOWN IN REVERSE?

I've had my car three years and not seen that. Ever. Gonna go outside right now and check...........

I actually need to reset my PCM - I usually turn off all autolocking for fear of a lockout at a car wash, etc. Now that I'm moving into a house, I get to wash my own cars again!!
Carwash Chris????? Yikes! Hey, we still need to meet for coffee.

For me...I let it lock itself while underway. I don't know, for some reason I feel safer that way.

The mirror adjustment switch must be set for the passenger side mirror for this to work.

Nick, what he said. Once you have it in that position and you move the shifter into reverse, down she goes!

Stick around more often. You might learn more.

If the car is unlocking the doors for you in the event of an accident then that suggests that the doors should be in the locked position when underway. Regardless of where you live.

Yes sir we do - maybe next weekend... PM me.

As for the car wash - it's a necessity for another month or so.

I often have a child or two in the car, so I set the locks for automatic. I got used to it with my previous MB vehicles.

And up here in Canukistan, carjacking is unusual to say the least.

Working in the city (L.A.) on the advice of a good friend, a detective, I started using automatic lock a long time ago. On his advice, for several years a long time ago (my 993 days 10+ years ago) I also kept a loaded Glock in my door pocket (even though no CCW in Cali). I have stopped carrying the Glock illegally, but it can't hurt to keep the doors locked. I still have quite a weapon if needed - turn wheel, high revs, drop clutch!

West of the Mississippi, and I don't have the auto-lock on. While I'm in the car, if I should need the doors locked, then I just do it myself. Like richc said, if some carjacker wants my car, then I'll simply hand it over. We all have insurance, and our lives are certainly more valuable than any car.

Well, that theory might hold water if you exclude the west coast, especially Southern California, especially the greater Los Angeles area, which likely has the most carjackings and road rage violence of any metropolitan area in the entire US.

I have the auto-lock feature enabled. I always hated this with rental cars, but it does not feel natural to reach for the lock button with my right hand versus all my other cars having the locking mehcanism on the door itself. So it was just easier to have the carlock itself.

The next poll should be how do the majority "unlock" their cars, pull the door handle or press the button? But that probably doesn't provide the feedback you're looking for in your east vs west theory.

always use the locking system - whilst monaco is one of the safest little places on the planet as soon as you leave the principality , there are areas where the couple kids on scooters constantly come up to cars queing in traffic, the one on the back hops off either goes through the window or opens the door goes for wallets, handbags, phones, jewellery and even watches - then hops back on the scooter and they are off - with no chance of being caught as all cars locked in traffic and scooters under 50cc didnt until recently need license plates. so even on the cote d'azur there are no go areas
