Default Sequential Shifter System

I recently saw this product demonstrated at GMG and was looking for more info and found this forum . Has anyone any experience with such a system or some thoughts ? Seeing that GMG is involved it I feel there must be something good going on. I am going to post this in the 996 forum as well as perhaps someone over there has some input.

I don't get it. You still have a clutch to deal with. He doesn't demonstrate how it works with a turning steering wheel,--which complicates things quite a bit.

I saw that car, or one like it, at GMG at their open house a few months ago. The system isn't "cheap", but I can't remember the exact price. $5000 comes to mind, but I could be wrong.

Nope, because you still have a clutch.

I wonder how many GT3/2 owners will want to take a raw sports car and turn it into a tiptronic like vehicle.

I wonder when you go from 6 to 3, for example, does it go from 6->5->4->3 or it just goes from 6 to 3 directly.. (since it is not a new transmission.. just a mechanism / program that convert the linear motion to H pattern, right?)

If it goes from 6 to 5 to 4 to 3, does that mean you need to learn how to blip the throttle / clutch super fast now?

If it goes from 6 to 3 directly, do you have to re-learn heel & toe so you blip extra throttle for the big jump?

Hmm...

those paddles seem like a recipe for overrevs unless you clutch on every downshift

Can anyone help me understand how similar (at least in principle) this sequential gearbox compares to the one in the GT3 RSR race car? If not, how different it is?

Thank you very much for any explanation.

Regards,

Peter, the designer, was nice enough to show me this system at the LBGP. The car was sitting still, but still looked very cool.

You have 2 options, the paddles, and a bump shifter.

You still have to depress the clutch, just like you would normally. But instead of clutch-in, shift, clutch-out, you tap a lever and push then release the clutch and the shift is done.

Also you can "pre-load" shifts. If you are coming into a corner and you want to go from 5th to 3rd, just tap the lever twice, hit the clutch and you're there.

Plus you always have an LED readout of what gear you are in.

I think the price will be closer to $10k installed.

Very cool system.

I think you are closer in the installed price. So you essentially pre-select the gear you want, and then it gets implemented when you hit the clutch. Makes sense.

So the shift only takes place once the sensor detects the clutch is depressed?

So I guess it does shift from 5th to 3rd, bypassing the 4th (in the example you mentioned).. does the program interact w/ the ECU to blip the throttle for you?

Regards,
This system seems to automate the gear selection electrically and uses the clutch signal to trigger the solenoids that shift the gears. The standard syncro ring gear box is used.

In a real race cars, the gear box uses engagement dogs (like a motorcycle transmission). These transmissions are usually up shifted without the clutch.

Some interesting information on a race transmission can be found here
