Default rear window wiper

Is the rear window wiper a necessity, I don't like the look of it. I'll be driving in North East weather.

It's an option you can either select or not select at the time or ordering. I believe even if you do wind up ordering it, you can remove the wiper arm after and have it appear more or less that it was never there.

I don't know why, however, I like the look of the rear wiper.

It harkens back to the 993 era, when a lot higher percentage
of P-Cars were equipped with this option.

It is also pretty handy in the rainy months.

The aerodynamics of the coupes is such that the rear windows stay rather clear without the wiper (none of mine ever had one). If I went to a coupe I would probably want one just to be different! So many delete it today because of the look.

Personally, I think it's a waste of money (and weight) on the 911.

My 996 never seems to accumulate much water (or snow for that matter) on the rear window without it.

Seems to look alright on the older 911s. But not right for the 997.

If you intend to put a wing on the back, I think it would look silly. If you intend to keep the default spoiler, it adds a nice touch.

perhaps where you live, but here in NE Ohio I use it all the time, esp when it is snowing. The rear defroster is weak in melting snow

Don't need one for rain. Snow, maybe, but then again I wouldn't know... Didn't order it on mine.

I have one on mine, thought it was silly until I began using it and now I like it.

Avoid the rear wiper like the freakin plague--unless Porsche has redesigned it (and I don't think they have) it is literally an ugly scratch waiting to happen.

You see, if you lift the wiper arm up to clean the glass (pulling it up to the end of its spring travel) never turn it loose. If the wiper arm falls, the blade pivots and ends up going metal to paint, putting a nice scratch in the painted area framing the left side of the rear glass.

And while you may be careful as can be, you cannot account for third parties, like dealers who wash your car. True story, I had my Turbo in for bodywork, and the body shop was cleaning up the car, and whoops--scratched the way I described. I was not pleased and it got worse. They fixed the scratch, and the idiot cleaning up the car did it again.

So if you're gonna get the rear wiper, prior to any service visit always take some electrical tape and tape the wiper blade to the arm, so it cannot pivot and scratch your paint, when third parties who don't know better, don't keep a hand on that darn wiper arm at all times when cleaning the back glass.

And you darn sure don't need the wiper while driving--as for snow, I'll take my coat sleeve or the broom brush on the end of my window scrapper to wipe the snow off the back glass. Worth it to have a much cleaner looking rear view of the car without the "paint scratcher" option. You just don't need a rear wiper on this car.
