Default 997.2 X51??

Any thoughts on when (and if) an X51 package will be offered on the 997.2? How long did it take for the X51 package to come out after the release of the 997.1?

The X51 skipped the first year 997S. Once the new 997.2 as been around a little (and people start to get jaded) they will talk up the new stuff you can't live without! It's a Porsche thing.

Ah, heck...it's a car guy thing;-) I remember thinking how fast a 1987 Corvette was and it had 245-hp. Now I wonder how I could live without 400!

I recall reading somewhere (cannot find it) that Porsche unofficially said that there would be no X51.

Supposedly hardly noticeable day to day over a Carrera S.

997.2 X51 article.

https://www.evo.co.uk/porsche/911/69...owerkit-review

With no appreciable difference to noise or character, the Powerkit adds too little to the 911 experience.

The GTS came with the X-51 from the factory and I agree that the additional power is barely noticeable compared to a 997.2 C2S or 997.2 C4S. How much did it add? I forgot and I'm too tired to look it up but I think it was 21 hp or 23 hp. To me the bigger difference is the sound. Not dramatic by any stretch but it's there, at least to my ears. Hard to explain but the best I can can come up with is if you put a 997.2 C2S with PSE next to a GTS, cranked both of them and the drove them,, a Porsche novice might point to the C2S as sounding a little "softer". What makes the X-51's distinctive exhaust sound I don't know but it's there. Like I said, at least to me but maybe not to you. Scroll to 1:47 in this video and judge for yourself.

Sandwedge: I understand every bit of what You are saying.
I had a 997 4S Gen1 with the x51. Effect was barely noticeable but the character of the engine, the sound was a complete different car. The engine was more hollow, unsophisticated than a standard. The sound wa much more sharp and mean than the normal. Hard to put the finger on but in my opinion very very different from the ordinary one.
At one point there was gentleman in a brand new 991 (at the time) that followed me into a gas station, jumped out of his car and asked if it was a GT3 but all panels converted into a c4s.
Now, the exact clone of my car is for sale but in Gen 2. Even color and rims are the same....

Henrik....I think your words of hollow, sharp and unsophisticated are spot on in describing the X-51 exhaust note maybe with the addition of mechanical. Different in a lot of ways hard to describe but you know something is different. Again, power wise, basically the same as between a base .2 and a .2 S so marginally noticeable. Between a base .2 and a GTS though then I think we're up against about 50hp so that's hard not to take note of.

Are the exhaust on the GTS and normal x51 identical?

One thing I'm aware of regarding the above point, GTS comes with different exhaust finishers/tips. But you can buy these separately. I don't think buying the X51 seperately or having it fitted from factory order would result in having these.

Otherwise, to my knowledge, x51 comes with PSE, and so does the GTS and the PSE are the same.

Here is a copy of Total 911 Issue 108, which discusses X51 impressions in detail.

(edit: seems like only 997.1 X51 is discussed in detail here, but gives you some interesting info)

I wouldn't have had a 997.2 without it.

I've owned both a 997.2 C2S and a GTS and yes it is barely noticeable in normal driving. Peak torque is exactly the same 310 ft-lbs so you won't notice any extra shove either from the "butt" dyno. Where you do notice it is above 6600 rpm. The regular engine makes peak power around there while the X51 keeps going to make peak power at 7300 rpm and still pulls hard to redline at 7500 rpm. The engine note actually changes a bit up top too and it sort of "screams" to redline which is very satisfying to wind out in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear (on a racetrack of course). It honestly feels like it can keep going since the delivery is so linear, compared to the non X-51 which feels like it runs out of breath a bit at 7k. If power is your main concern, the only place the X51 will be quicker than the regular engine is 6600-7500rpm which is only a 900 rpm window which is why most people will never notice it.

Yes, i share this experience, much more edge when rev. a bit. And, the sound to it! Its a little mini GT3 over it. I sold my Gen 1 x51 in a weak and a bit too fast moment. I will go for a gen 2 again, not moving to a 991...
