For the guys with multiple cars... what's the point??
I just got home from test driving a white 964 C4. I can probably get it for about $17k... but I don't know WHY i want it. I already have the 997 and a 95 M3, and would be getting it as a 3rd car. I live a mile away from work, so I don't even drive that much except for maybe 100 miles on the weekend. But I still want it. For those of you with 3+ cars (and no one to share with), can you come up with a rational reason to do it? I want to pull the trigger, but my conscience is telling me to a) invest the money b) pay off student loans c) pay off the 997
what do you guys think, should i go through with it????

In your case....I pay off debt.
In my case...debt paid off, house-3 more payments, stable at what I do for a living, same gal for 30 years, good son 1/2 way through college....well you get the drift.
Having multiple cars is like having multiple honeys in which they and you are just one happy family.
Red 68 280sl...nice to drive with the top down on cooler days.
I have driven on 500-600 miles round trip with the mrs and although
not a Porsche, its fun and an eye catcher. First oldy I bought..cant let go
Red Porsche 83SC....ahhh, fun sporty car for the curves in the hills
..you feel like your young and wild turning into those curves..WOW
Red 997 Targa...nice for long confy cruises or elegant night to a
nice dinner or hotel. Style and class...and not another MB SL..
Its an tiptronic...so I also use it when I am lazy.
White BMW 73CSI...well, getting restored and should have it soon..
..not sure in what catagory it will be. Not even sure it was a wise move.
There are days I'll wake up and feel like driving one car..the next day I feel completely different and want to drive a different car. The same when we go
on long trips.
But for you...don't waste your money untill you have money to waste. I would either invest or pay of debt...but don't get into debt with the uncertainty that exists in this economy and the direction we are going. You will know when the time is right and don't overlook an 83SC or 87-89.
IMHO

dude, if you have student loans, pay those off first. then buy the 3rd car. as someone who had $130K worth of student loans at one point, removing that albatross is sweeter than any 3rd car could ever be. writing that final check was one of the highlights of my entire life. start there, then worry about other, better ways to spend $17k.

More cars = pain in the ***. I was up to 4 at one time. I ended up not wanting to drive them, because then I had to wash them. Time I could have spent driving was spent maintaining them. I am down to three - two daily drivers and one (997) weekend car.
I have been at a new job for 4 months 5 miles from the house. I ride a bike now. Much more fun than driving. If I could count on this job lasting, I would sell another car and go down to two. But in these uncertain times, I will need a daily driver again.

That all depends on the length of the loan and also if you are able to deduct anything on your taxes...ie interest on the car for business. I do not know if the interest on student loans are dedutible...in the olden days some people would pay them off with a second on their house so that they can deduct interest payments.

Same here. $80k in loans, and that was in 1996. That last check was better than hitting the lotto. You already have TWO vehicles better than most people will ever have. Pay off those bills, maintain the two you have already. Put the $17k in your sock drawer. There will be plenty other good deals that you can't pass by later... IMO.
To answer your question of why? Why not, as long as you can afford them. Everyone has different reasons, racing, DD, weekend cars, mood, etc.

Pay off your debt! Be financially secure then possibly reward yourself at the end? See how you feel.
In the mean time don't take your current cars for granted. You have great taste

I grew up with a red 280SL (a 1971) which my mother still uses on 'nice' days. She has offered it to me but I don't think I can pull off the 4th car at this time.
It's a wonderful car...next to the Gullwing 300 SL, it is my favorite Benz.

I'd pay off the 997 before buying another car or working on the student loans.
