Default Whistling sound coming from steering column

Hey folks,

Just noticed this over the weekend. When I'm going slow in a parking lot my steering column makes this whistling sound when I make a sharp turn.

Anyway I think it's my steering column? It's not noisy but my concern is if its not looked at it will get worse.

Any suggestiongs?

Hey Kurt, have you checked your power steering fluid level lately?

Your power steering's not supposed to whistle while it works, unless it's low on fluid, and in that case it's whistling to try to get your attention?

That's just a guess on my part, that your power steering fluid level might be low. But that should be your first check.

Thanks Ben. I'll check it later this afternoon...I haven't checked it before any tips? Or I could just read the manual later on.

That's not good.

Your car has the dreaded Porsche curse... Loose nut behind the wheel.. ...

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Well I checked it cold, engine off for about 6 hours.

The level looks good, its well passed the cold marker on the dipstick and the other side within the hot range. I don't think its the fluid level but I would like to know what it was when new to give me a reference.

I think it may have something to do with the "Note" towards the bottom of the first column in the manual.

Default Similar experience

I had a similar experience, but it was more like a creaking or groaning sound that I thought was coming from the left wheel rather than the steering column.

Dealer said it was low steering fluid. I didn't dig further at the time, but I didn't think you should be losing steerng fluid except from a leak, so perhaps this is a concern. After the top-up, I've heard the noise a couple of times, but it is less common.
