My car has 2400km on it. All the way through from delivery (55km) to around 1500km I kept checking the oil level based on this type of thread but it only dropped 1 bar in all that time. So I got a bit lazy.

Then on Friday when I started the car up came the "'check oil level" message. Took nearly 2 liters to top it up. Damn.

This excessive oil consumption on the 997.2 is really dissapointing.

As far as the running in process we don't have an official one in the UK so not sure why its stipulated in the US.

I was told to keep the revs to no more than 5.5k for the first 1k but it was just advice from the salesman rather than Porsches official line.
Love the misinformation going on here.

Porsche 911 engines were equipped with true, separate dry sumps for decades and we measured the oil level with a dipstick that was part of the oil filler port.

The dealer telling you it will eat oil for the first 2-3K is contrary to what Zuffenhausen is putting out. Common sense dictates that during break in sometimes they use more oil. Some use NONE at all during break in. (Luck of the draw there).

The Porsche line is to keep it under 4200 rpms for the first 2000 miles. Also, Zuffenhausen suggests staying under 5000 rpms for the first 2000. Your choice.

If these were Toyotas or Hondas I would think they wouldn't tolerate such excessive oil consumption.

Eh, I just check it often. The big annoyance is not finding any shops nearby that sell the right oil. I need to buy it by the case when I can.

Here's a good deal on Mobil 1 0W-40 if you need a case. They have a $10 rebate through September. Makes it $36.95 after rebate for a case shipped with no tax.

At 5000 miles now and many track days. Consumed a total of... zero oil. This is my 2nd batch of oil - did a change at 2k break in.

At the $47 price per 6-pack, thats $7.83 per quart. My local auto parts store only charges $7 per quart. After $10 rebate you do come out slightly ahead (only $6.17 per quart), but I'd rather just pay the local parts store and get the oil now. If you live in areas where Amazon doesn't charge sales tax... then you may be justified in buying from them.

Yep. I do, plus Amazon has the handy 1-click purchase setup. So it is literally one click then arrives at my doorstep in a couple days. High on the convenience factor for me.

Thanks for the info about Amazon. I'll probably order a case this weekend.

At 1700 miles my 09S finally dropped one bar and I added about half a quart. Seems reasonable for a car during initial breakin.

Just broke 10000 miles. Still have all bars since first oil change at 3200.

My 997.1 consumed so much oil in the first few thousand miles that I used to wonder if it was using it for fuel!? However, it stopped consuming any oil after this initial period and in the last 20,000 miles or so in the car I don't think I added any oil.

With my new 997.2 due anyday, I went out and bought enough oil to get me through the run-in period. Now, 2500 miles from new the car hasn't needed a drop. Something about 'Sod's Law'?

Mark.

Adding to this survey, I have a C2 (3.6 liter) now at 6,000+ miles. First oil change at 1,500 with filter. Engine burned oil from the outset at some rate. Now I keep a log of 'bars down' and 'oil added'; and the consumption seems to be at a fairly even rate of one quart per 1,400 miles. I think that is excessive compared with other cars I have driven, including a 996 3.4 liter model year 2000. That consumed virtually no motor oil.

1000 miles. One bar down. But was one bar down @ 10 miles as it had sat on the lot for 3 months.
