PCA national minimum standard stated that:

"Open Cars: Any make of car delivered with factory-installed roll over
protection meets the minimum standards for PCA DE events. In these
cars the soft-top must be in the up position or the hard top installed.
If a car does not have factory installed roll over protection,a roll bar
must be installed, which meets the "broomstick" rule (the driver's
helmeted head is below a bar placed on top of the rollbar and
windshield). All targa tops must be installed unless there is addition
roll over protection. All sunroofs must be in the closed position. The
windshield alone is not considered to be factory roll over protection."

Our region allows cab but my top has to be up.
Most of the tracks in California allow OEM pop-up protection also.

I hope that they don't change the requirement. I hate to install a roll bar in my car. I know that it would be safer, but it is ugly and I use mine on the street.

There are definitely a number of cabriolets that run at NHMS with PCA (NCR/NER) and I'm almost positive that they all have just the stock rollover protection.

That being said, my 986 which will run for the first time in May has a Brey Krause roll bar extension. I figure since Boxster Spec requires it, it is probably a reasonable thing to do.

BTW Gene,....I WILL be there on May 18th as well. My wife has decided to try DE and she will be there in the Boxster. I look forward to meeting you.

Funny how this thread went from a tire question to a cab/roll bar discussion:-) As Coochas and others have said, cabs (with tops up) are perfectly acceptable at track events. Some organizers require more in the way of roll bar protection or clearance verification than others, but PCA (NCR/NER) says 996/997 cabs are ok to run with their stock pop-up bars.

Last year I looked into a PDA event at Lime Rock (http://www.pdadrivingschool.com/index.php). They have a stricter requirement that my car pass the broomstick test. Some will recall that I went through the process at my dealer, manually activating the bars and measuring the clearance while in the driver's seat. That thread with pictures was posted on 10/13/08 (I'm not sure how to link to a thread here - just search on "broomstick" and you'll find it). When I wrote back to the PDA people and attached the pics they said I'd be fine. Then winter came and the season ended, so I never got to do that one.

Looking forward to meeting those of you who'll be there on the 18th!

Anyone planning to do the PCA/NER annual ramble to Cooperstown on Apr. 24-26? My wife and I are registered for that - should be a fun weekend.

Gene

I remember, Gene. Thank you for measuring the pop-up and your pictures.
That answered a long time question for me and helped me at various tracks.

Have fun at the track. I am sure that you will have as big a smile on your face as I.
