The key I upgraded to w/my 996.
To the OP's credit. Even VW is doing key FOBs w/out a blade. I'm sure keyless start is only a year or two off as well.

I think the seats are pretty comfortable...but more than likely it was the only unlocked car in the garage on a cold night. He or she apparently had their own little party in there...the radio was tuned to a station I don't listen to, ashtray was bulging with cigarette butts, and the rearview mirror was taken off for other uses (but left behind and easily snapped back in place). Thankfully the only damage done was the awful stench that took every product on the market to (almost) get rid of.

ESPECIALLY given they explicitly tell you to NOT UNLOCK THE CAR WITH THE KEY.
You are supposed to unlock it with the remote buttons, otherwise, unless you follow protocol, you will set off the alarm. So they stick us with this metal shiv in the day of RFID, and then give us instructions to not use it. Whats up with that.
They can still have that left side slot to insert the fob into for starting the car.. just the metal stick needs to go.. especially since it serves almost no functional purpose, given the electronic interactions that happen with the security system anyway.

...I were going in and out of the car before we left, and since we each had keys, both thought we were locking the car...however, due to the key design, one of us unlocked it.
A button each for locking and unlocking...like every other keyless entry I can remember using...is more assuring and more convenient than counting the blinkers to confirm the car is locked.

From Porsche.com"
"All new 911 models are equipped as standard with an immobiliser with in-key transponder and an alarm system with contact-sensitive exterior protection and radar-based interior surveillance."
That sounds pretty good. Can anyone comment of the "contact-sensitive exterior protection" bit?

Maybe somebody left a key in the car.
