What is optimal tire pressure for best wear characteristics
#16
The manual provides some model specific guidance, but provides only ONE pressure for the car model - and there is a chart for adjusting for ambient temps somewhere. But that basic chart provides reference to TWO other places for tire pressures.
Then there's the TPMS +/- reading that tells you how many pounds you are over/under the ideal for the tire type (and size?) you indicated to the computer as being installed. This number seems to track with what the chart in the manual recommends, adjusted for ambient temperatures automatically.

I'll air it down to 34/40 cold and see how it feels.
mdrums, are you saying that I'll get less then optimal wear if I'm running fully loaded pressure but only carrying 300 lbs?
Let me rephrase my question. Is anyone running their tire pressures in Michelin PS2's at something besides what Porsche recommends for their given load in order to optimize their tire wear?
I will give Michelin a call on Monday to see what their opinion is.

Recently replaced my original rear PS2's with 20K miles, including 4 track days. Posted a pic of the old tires on January 7th. Fronts still have 5-7K miles worth of tread left.
Always ran 33/39 according to TPMS. My TPMS read-out, however, is low by approximately 3lbs. So I have been running 36/42 with very good results. Hope that helps.

Woohoo, an answer to my question; thanks Frino

I guess that's right. I don't make a habit of looking at the heavy load pressures in the manual. It would be nice if the door jam plate showed both loads or at least indicated which one. This is why I ignore the door jam plate.

Interesting, how in the 997.2 owner's manual the partial load pressure is 1 pound each tire more (34/40) than the partial load amount in the 997.1 owner's manual (33/39).

So usless you guys with 09's 19" tires are carrying 4 passangers of 150lbs each and luggage just use the lower pressures in the owners manual:
34/40 for Carrea S
34/37 for Carrera 4 S
see ya! Mike

Yes I am saying that not only will not get optimal wear at the higher pressure you will not get optimal wear at a pressure lower than 34/40 on your C2S. Also these pressures are stated for optimal street handling and protecting the wheel too. Pressures for the track are totally different than why Porsche states these certain pressures for the street.

Mike,
Thanks for your input.
One more question; who does your alignment work? You can PM if you'd prefer not to post it.

I have 19" and run 33/39 for great handling and wear. However, wear is more of an alignment issue, the right foot, and how you hit the corners. If your looking for good tire wear, slow down... : )
