Default Poll on Your Mechanical Aptitude

I have noticed that many 997 owners are frequently first time Porsche owners and also new to the concept of knowing how to work on their cars themselves. (It could be a function of the cost of these things!)

So in order to figure out whether owners are adept at working on things mechanical I felt that a single question might give me insight into that -- please bear with me,--and no flames!

3 torque wrenches, 1 breaker bar and 2 cordless impact drivers. And I'm still lame at wrenching - but it's fun. Pretty much limited to fluid changes, wheel changing and brake pads.

the poll is flawed. any of us with mechanical aptitude will not hesitate to flaunt it. on the other hand, who would freely admit that they are a noob car work?

Dan - I think a lot of us might be willing and/or able to work on our modern Porsches, but so much is done through the OBDII port rather than with a wrench and a lift. I think the most complex thing I might attempt myself (well, with a little help and a lift) is to change the exhaust system out. Seems pretty straightforward and I've done it on other cars.

2 torque wrenches, assorted breaker bars, etc...still didn't prevent me from over tightening the oil filter casing, which dealer had to break to get off....warranty item.......yea!
I better lighten upon on the Beer!!!

I have half a dozen certified torque wrenches and have no problem taking my car in for service. Doesn't mean I don't have any mechanical ability, just that I choose to spend my personal time doing else.

I've set up production lines for many niche products including Ford GT and the new Ford Cobra Jet Mustang. I love cars but beyond work I'd rather drive than work on them.

I'm ok at mechanical stuff, until I get angry. Then the pick axe comes out, and experience has shown me it's not a good tool to use on cars.

That's nothing - I can even add oil! (and only make a mess maybe 50% of the time)

Many of us have limited knowledge & experience, and do NOT want to try it out on a $100k car.

I guess the reason I asked the question in the first place was because one of the club members recently lost a fan belt on his 930,--and then had no idea that there is an extra one in the tool kit,--and then he didn't have clue one how to put it on. With these cars you have to have some innate talent for keeping yourself on the road if you're out in the middle of no place without a mobile phone link to 1 800 Porsche...

I understand that bit... I had a '72 VW Bug as my first car, so I learned all about my points, keeping the fuel filter clean, etc. Lots of fun - I like it better now when I can afford to take my Porsche in for service...

Every time something needs doing to one of my cars, I buy the tool for the job and then send the car to a garage to have the work done.

Same for the house really, all the equipment and then my wife gets a professional in to do the work.
