Age of 10 I was advanced tool gopher for my dad. Setting the point gap? Value spring adjustments? Carburetor jet replacement? I had watched them all numerous times, head under hood, kneeling on the front bumper.
Washing pistons in gasoline. Getting the rings back on in the right order. Torquing the head gasket correctly. Thanks Dad.
I'm going to call him right now.

I kept an Alfa Romeo running thru college-grad school years - nuff said ;-)
I will admit to this tho: To truly enjoy working on my car I want (need) a lift - which I am presently researching (with a lot of help from some posters on the DE/Racing Bd - thx!). Guess I am getting soft!

I guess the reason I asked the question in the first place was because one of the club members recently lost a fan belt on his 930,--and then had no idea that there is an extra one in the tool kit,--and then he didn't have clue one how to put it on. With these cars you have to have some innate talent for keeping yourself on the road if you're out in the middle of no place without a mobile phone link to 1 800 Porsche...
What's the difference between a porsche and any other car when it comes to being able to do certain things yourself? Some are mechanically inclined some aren't. If you don't have the "talent" and your without a phone or an 800 number I guess your screwed whether you're in a porsche or any other car?

if I take a wrench with a 1 foot handle, and apply what feels like 10 pounds of force to it, based on prior experience of how much a gallon of water weighs, and realize that the bolt is not turning and therefore I have to push harder, does that count as having a torque wrench?
I do have a wire bonding machine in my basement.

Three torque wrenches. But one is an old Sears and I don't trust it anymore. Compressor, complete set of open end and ratcheting wrenches - metric and SAE. Pair of low profile jacks. etc, etc. Just lowered and leveled my 997S. Overall, I'd give myself a C+. Tops.

With my 356, I do try to do a lot. With my first two cars early in life (British sports cars) at 16-17 years old, I pulled the engines and did a bunch of stuff; then after a 40 year hiatus, I got the 356 and assumed I was "experienced". The truth is I usually get frustrated easily, waste endless hours, and usually give up and take it to my friendly 356 mechanic.

I voted no - Because I have just started working on my own cars, but I have been too cheap to buy a torque wrench/want to buy a good quality one.
The typical human can torque about 60lbs of force which is enough for wheels...
Anyways. I need digital calipers too.

So Dan, your saying if you don't know how to replace, say a fan belt you shouldn't own the car?

Coach Ditka, on why he quit coaching, and my rationale for no longer wrenching:
"The highs aren't what they used to be, and the lows are a lot lower..."
Yes, I have a torque wrench, but not a 997...

Three torque wrenches.
I get off on threads like this.
http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=192646
I built 2 Cycle lay-down go-Kart motors for about 4 years. I love
working on my own car but I hate working on someone else's car.
I have not dropped a Porsche motor yet.
My friend has.
