Default 997 volume down, Boxster assembly moves to Zuffenhausen

I didn't see this posted, so here goes.

Porsche AG will assemble the Boxster 987.2 in Zuffenhausen, rather than Valmet in Finland, so Zuffenhausen stays fully workloaded. That leaves Valmet only building Caymans, and most likely hurting.

Here's the link from AMS (in German):

Ties in with the other thread about 911 quality control issues - they need to keep the workers at Zuffy employed full time and happy. Smart move, unless you play on buying a Cayman built by some disgruntled Finns that is.

I thought that I had read that Porsche had a contract with another company other than Valmet for Boxsters and Caymans,--isn't it in Austria now? Curious to see how they can pull in the production to Zuff. while they let their contract hires sit on the sidelines...

Dan, you are thinking of Magny-Steyr of Austria. They have a contract to assemble the next generation Boxster/Caymans (988?) starting in model year 2012. It appears the PAG contracts are for the option of assembly, just as been done with Valmet.

I can't think of a previous instance where they brought volume assembly of the entry model to Zuffenhausen, though. The 944/968s were assembled in Nekarsulm, IIRC.

That's correct. The 924, 944 and later 968 bodies were manufactured in Neckarsulm, just north of Heilbronn on B27. (I lived in Heilbronn for awhile and used to drive by the former Audi-NSU plant in Neckarsulm on the way to work.)

In the early days of the Boxster (986) the car was built in both plants (Valmet/Finland and Zuffenhausen). The full outsourcing came only when capacity in Zuffenhausen was not sufficient anymore to assemble both 996 + 986 due to the high demand for both models. Engines for the midengined P-cars always have been built in Zuffenhausen though. One can identify the Zuffenhausen assembled Boxsters by the "S" in the VIN (as opposed to the "U" for the Finnish siblings). I assume 911 orders are down by 20-25% or so, which would allow for a full transfer of Boxster assembly to Zuffenhausen.

So you could say that Boxster production in Valmet is 'Finished.'
Sorry.
