Anyone has a membership to Wilshire Country Club? I hear it is one of the best one in So Cal. Is there any country club where the membership is not over 6 digits in So Cal? Recently started playing golf again, and I'm looking into a country club membership. Couldn't find any website with membership fee info. Figured most P car owners belong in one.

Wilshire is an old and established CC. It used to be (and still might be) one of the premier CCs in the LA area. Used to host PGA and Sr PGA tournaments. A lot of entertainment and financial sector members. I think Lakeside (Toluca Lake) and Riviera (Pacific Palisades) now claim a lot entertainment memberships

You might try some of the some CCs that are not in the LA basin. San Fernando Valley has lots of Golf CC's. A lot less expensive both up front and recurring costs but you'll need to drive a bit.

This club offers a vibrant history and is renown for its celebrity members. This course is tucked away and the grounds overlook the six acre lake. Cost: $80,000 to join; requires member sponsors

Played Lakeside years ago w/ a close buddy of mine who was a member. I recall seeing Bob Hope on the course (in his declining years) plus countless other celeb's. Great grill and card room. It used to be off limits to females but I suspect it's not these days. The staff was surperb; they anticipated every member move and were right there to help. They ran great parties/events; New Year's eve there was a real blast. I thought it was an equity stake club so $80K sounds pretty good compared to Wilshire at $150K.

Golf in LA begins and ends with Los Angeles CC espescially the North Course. Unfortunately unless your grandfather owned The Times or your parents held water rights to the city it's a little tough to get in.

Yeah, that's what I heard. I was surprised tha no websites had any info in membership fee for CC. Well, I guess they figure most would-be members are connected to someone who already are members. I don't mind paying that for Wilshire as long as there is equity stake. How does equity stake work exactly?

Friend of a friend is member at Los Coyotes CC, anyone has info on their membership fee and if equity stake or not? He says its always crowded. I heard some CC membership fees are under $10k.

I live a couple of blocks from Wilshire Country Club. I wanna be within 30 miles radius from L.A. San Fernando Valley to Orange County. Since I play once a week during the weekends, I don't mind driving out. Equity stake is something I would be interested

I would think twice about an equity stake in this environment even in LA. Roughly 20-25% of private clubs nationwide will not be here in five years. People are lined up trying to get their equity deposits back as it is now. Pay a flat fee and take your chances.

Me too, although at least in my case, I can get more of my money's worth if you look at the cost per stroke.

WSJ just did a good piece on country clubs. Membership has been down even before all this mess due to changing lifestyles, a glut of courses and the restriction of write offs for business. It never really recovered from the dot com bubble of the 90's. Now with the recession a lot of clubs will fail and convert to semi-private or public. Unless it's a pretty exclusive place I'd stay away from equity memberships.
