can anybody tell me what engine comes in the 997 carrera S and if it has changed since 2005?

was it the same engine for 06, 07 and 08?

However, the 2009 3.8L engine is COMPLETELY new, and is therefore different from the 2005 to 2008 3.8L engines.

Yup. It's Porsche first new engine design for the 911 since they got into the 'watercooled' 911 engines. Pretty kewl.

The Carrera S has had design changes through it's life, including, but not limited to, IMS seal, shaft and bearing changes in 2006 .
