rubber front spoiler function
The small rubber spoiler under the front end of my 997 is getting pretty ripped up and I'm thinking of removing it completely. Does anyone know if it serves any real function (especially considering the triple digit speeds typical of LA traffic)? if I remove it, should I replace it and if so, is it a simple do it yourself install? Thanks.

Yes, it's part of the aero package.

It's there so it can be scraped off on driveway approaches, which it does really well.
I've been driving with mine off for more than two-and-a-half years. So far, I've managed to keep the car under control.

Since none of us in the USA are spending that much time at 160 mph and up it probably makes little difference. I added something ELSE to sacrifice before that thing can get ripped off.

Dan - that is the cleanest looking undercarriage I have ever seen!!! Makes me feel like a complete slob instead of the **** type my wife would say I am.
What is the chin guard and where can I get one?

I purchased that from Performance Products. It comes with hardware,--but found that I had to beef it up with a few more fasteners than the kit provides.

Dan: which part are you referring to? I looked up Performance Products and saw no Porsche parts there.

The one I went with is this one,--"skid plate"

It's all ABS,--with fasteners. Be prepared to drill a few extra mounting points on it. It CAN be installed with the front bumper left on,--but it works out BETTER when it is off the car.
(Different than the one Leader is showing).

Dan - looks nice. I wish I knew of that before parking at my golf club and its d*mned EP Henry style curbing stops (which are just high enough.......).
Re the original post, 'ripped up' from what? Assuming you are not hitting curbs or have very low clearance areas somewhere on your driving route: In addition to the mentioned aero effects for speed solely, I think the small lip works in conjunction with the two small spoilers in front of the front tires (see Dan's pic) to streamline airflow so that road debris is pushed down under the car (reducing the likelihood of its bouncing up against the bottom of the car). Of course, to what extent that occurs, and the damage that results, is also (partly) a function of speed (and the nature of the debris at issue). ;-)
