i can agrue this...most the "ricers" around here admire my 944 and i have even talked some into buying them, and no they haven't made em ricer but upgraded with oem porsche parts.

the boxster is just a car in a long line of cars that have effectivly kept porsche in good selling numbers...starting with the 924, who many consider the car that kept porsche from tanking. porsche however is one of the most profitible car companies in the world, and the 911 is always in the top 10 of vehicles that retain value...though i feel that will change now with the production amount of the 996/997.

honostly the only thing porsche could add to their line-up that would keep them secured would be a 25g roadster/hardtop. but that will never happen.

people have always dreamed to own a porsche and the GTR just entered the 911's realm. not only the 911 but the vette, viper, a used ferrari, aston martin and some lambo's. the GTR is the car i think that won't last...it'll either end up like the vette, which is way to common, or it'll end up like a ford gt/enzo or carrera gt, and just gain value due to only being around a few yrs.

Yeah - that 944 is a real icon. The GT-R has already stood the test of time.

It's true that I have always wanted a Porsche. That's why I have a 911. I love the way the Cayman drives - but my first Porsche had to be a 911.

I'd consider a 944 if I wanted a track only car as they can be fast but they are a little too high maintenance to me.

i'm not saying the 944 is an "iconic porsche" what i'm saying, if you can draw that kid who only likes japanesse cars into buying a porsche, you might have just changed what that kid will buy when they get to a point of affording a 911 or gtr. get the flow of it....company loyalness.

Last time i checked most ricers don't really have the money to go buy a 911, nor do most really have the maturity for one. hell i'll admit when i first drove a 911 i scared myself and the owner. i caught it, but still i pulled over and handed him the keys. that was 2yrs ago when i was 19.

as for my 944. i love it. i bought it originally to replace my lil dodge neon, be good for daily driving, and eventually make it into a track car, and i've never had headaches with it, but i'll bet you this, more mechanics would rather deal with a 944 then 911. i mean sure a 911 wil net em more money, but for ease, thats the 944. do i want a 911, hell yes of course i do. but i don't have the money right now for the type i want. i'm very picky when it comes to me buying a certain type of car. the 911 being my dream car, i'm not likely to buy used unless it's got everything i want in it. that and i really only like 911's from 79-83 and the 997's. and i'd rather work my way to a 911, not be an arogant *** who owns a 911, like the one's i tend to meet. instead know what its like to acheive a dream of owning one, going into the dealer and getting the satisfaction of buying one, exactly what i want, and signing the papers for it. the dream of a lot of young people. american dream: own house and vette. mine own house and porsche 911 S. that dream is what will keep porsche around, people comign to a point to buy one and finally doing so. every year people do it.

I think the 944 is great. If they were still selling them new, I would have one. When I was 18 or 19, I had this picture of a 944 modded by some Swiss company (I think), and that was my absolute dream car. I liked the 944 better than the 911 back then, and the 911 better than the 928. It wasn't until the 996 that I liked the 911 best, and it wasn't until the 997 that I could afford one.

it's funny, cause as it looks, it won't be untill the 998 actually comes out that i'll b able to afford a 996. and damnit i don't like the headlights. i want a 911, not a 911 with a boxster front end.

i like my 944, and i'll likely own it till i buy my 911, or at least a 951. i like the design, the upgrades, the sheer fun that can be had with em. if i want to drive a 911 i'll just call my friend, he's got 3, i've driven all of em, and his cayman, btw, never go from a gt3 to a cayman in less than 5mins. you'll scare yourself

A friend had a black 944 Turbo and it was a mighty impressive car to drive. Quicker than it felt, wonderful handling, great gear shift, and surprisingly practical. Porsche could introduce 944/928 variants off the Panamera platform using VAG engines. I wonder if anyone has seen mules at the 'ring yet?

My point is that I've wanted a Porsche since I was a little kid (Where the love affair started for me) because I thought it was the coolest car and I wanted a high end performance car that could be driven daily (I realized this as I got older).

So if kids these days just aren't into Porsches as much, is Porsche in trouble in 20-30 years when these kids grow up?

...I do now.
