Default Car I'm looking into buyin. Driveshaft & Console replaced on a 4000 mile car?

I'm interested in a 2006 Carrera S Cab with 5900 miles. The carfax report shows a console replaced at 3000 miles and a driveshaft replaced around 4500.

Seems like a great deal of maintenance on a car with less than 6000 miles. Any thoughts? It doesn't show any accidents. There's a few other entries just noted as "service" with no details.

I'd have a couple of questions...

How did it end up in NY after spending all of its life so far in TN?

What are the explanations for the services - review the service records. Maybe your local dealer can pull them up and help with this.

Can the prior owner be contacted to ask about these issues and any other history?

The car is certified, so you'd only have the hassle if it continues to have problems. Maybe if the history turns out to be satisfactory, you can use it to beat the price down anyway. To me this car requires more diligence than a typical CPO car would; therefore I'd either keep shopping or expect a lower price for the added hassles and assurances.

Only thing off to me is a driveshaft replacement,--it's a 2-WD vehicle. What's a driveshaft on a 2WD car? Maybe on a 4WD which connects the tranny to the front differential.

I was wondering the same thing. Could be a half shaft, perhaps indicating an accident or just a flawed part, or it could be a crank shaft, which might have been more severe - or who knows, even an error. Thus it would be good to see those service records and/or talk to the prior owner.

Who cares? Car is certified and under warranty....so if its a good deal I would not let that history sway you away from buying it..IMHO>

To those of you with more experience with Porsche Dealerships...

I've been told that they will not make a phone call and request service records from the TN porsche dealer unless they have a deposit at an agreed upon price ahead of time. The final sale pending my approval.

Is that standard operating procedure? Am I being unreasonable? I seem alot to ask for me to hand them over $ before getting the service records.

I don't think you can arrive at a "final price" without the information you have requested. You have to know what you are buying. You will also want a read out of over-revs and the like to make sure the car has not been abused. Even if you have the right to back out, I wouldn't want to put a deposit down. Just as they don't want to waste their time with a potential tire kicker, you don't want to waste your time negotiating a price for a car you actually will not want. Tell them to get the records w/o preconditions or you aren't interested.

You are not being unreasonable. They are just pressuring you. You should have your questions answered before you commit.

Sounds like flood damage to me!

The console/dash is a regular replacement item after water damage.

Tread cautiously and make them satisfy your inquiries before you plunk down any dough!

Your questions to the dealer should be answered before a transaction occurs, just as my questions, phone calls, and emails should have been answered. It is common courtesy. Well run organziations realize this should be standard operating procedure.

I would walk away from that. Specially the way they threaten you on 'No deposit, No info'
Broken drive shaft to me is an abused frequent dropping the clutch launches.
There are a lot of 997s out there. Be patient and you'll find a good one.
