Looking at 2005/6 C2S without TPMS.

With the lack of a spare wheel, I had previously considered TPMS essential as an early marker of pressure changes. But now am not so sure...

The only posts I've read regarding TPMS relate to errors and wanting to reset the system. I have yet to read any post aside from the one above that puts it on the must have list.

 

well, i'm sure you'll get replies from both sides of the fence on this one...but i have an 06 C2S, and i like having it. sure it may not be spot-on accurate, but it's close enough - mine is within 2PSI of (3 different) guages i have used. plus it can def be an early warning of a "more than a slow leak" puncture. that being said, i dont think it's a make or break type option but nice to have.

Yes, nice to have; essential? Nope.

 

In my 993 I once suffered a rapid loss of tyre pressure on the freeway whilst driving between two semis. I only knew of it when the back end of the car started rolling side-to-side. Scary stuff when there's so little wiggle-room.

With even less sidewall and no spare, it was one of my 'must have' options on my '06 C2S.

 

Agree. I'd like to know how many people have really avoided a significant problem by having it.

 

I like it but it is a P.I.T.A. if you ever have a need to lower your tires pressures for a certain type of driving. Then you end up with beeps, alarms, and warning lights that do not clear even after re-inflating the tires.

I would say for street driving it is a benefit to have it if for nothing else peace of mind.

 

It's saved me several times. And I never have a set-up problem from it.

It was optional on the 997 until it became standard on USA cars in 2007.

First real clue of a problem. When I sense a change in feedback from a roadway I can look down quickly to see that it's not the tire pressure.

 

It probably wouldn't have done much for you if you were suffering a rapid loss of pressure at freeway speed.

 

It's great on the track too!

 

More important than TPMS is a tire plug kit. I have one in each car...

No spare so for the road it's essential in my mind (agree that it's a pita on the track with lower pressures but you get used to the warning light and just ignore it - shame you can't set your own preferred pressures and limits with it though, then you could have one stored for the track). Never trust the readings if you want accurate numbers though - always use a proper gauge.

Isn't it becoming a legal requirement to have it in some countries now??

 

I do not have TPMS in my 06. Coming up on 3 years with zero flats between my regular and winter tires. While I would prefer to have TPMS, I absolutely do not think it is essential.
I do carry a spare but remember that TPMS is not going to tell you if you're going to get a flat, it's going to tell you that you have a flat. I can't recall ever having a flat on any car in the last 30 years that was not immediately obvious from the driving characteristics of the car!
I also believe that it is very important to look at all 4 wheels before getting in the car EVERY TIME: I am religious about this quick inspection.
All that being said, I am glad it is now standard on my upcoming purchase.

 

Essential no...nice to have, definitely I agree with Edgy on the utility of it, and have had no issues thus far. Matt, in MA, I can't read the website of the kit you posted can you PM it to me, as I would like to buy one for my car for sure. Thanks Cole
