Default Track Junkies - PCM Lap Timer

Does any one use the lap timer built in the car?

No. Having to use the control stalk to mark laps makes it pretty worthless to me. I'm sort of surprised nobody has made an add-on that ties in to a track beacon. Even with that, though, a proper data logger is a lot more useful.

I agree that tapping the stalk is not very accurate and a lap timer is much better. But I do use mine at DE just for reference. DE has enough traffic and necessary point by that the built in timer is good enough for me for now.
I can judge my progress during the day from run to run with adj. for traffic.

Porsche does some absolutely insanely ridicoulous things!!

The car has GPS built in. Simple lap timers today use GPS to set perfectly good lap timing, what the F were they thinking. That is what I want to do at 135mph is hit stalks.

That is just shameful.

Thanks guys.

Not only do you have to hit the stalk while doing 135, you have to hit it twice! (for new lap)

I like to talk to the engineers who design the interior of our otherwise great car and knock some sense into them.

Porsche would rock beyond belief if they included a GPS data logger that did all the standard "track stuff". That'd be insane!

Still use simple Hot Lap system....sensor out the passenger side...display here.
Low tech...but hands-free .

I do agree that it is very difficult to try and drive and hit the stalk twice at the start/finish every lap!

I do use mine at the DEs just as a reference as well.

If they had put the control stalk on the right hand side at least your passenger could be hitting that for you...

Gregg,

I have this as well from my 993, I was just hoping that I would not have to rewire in new car. Any it looks like I have some wiring to do.

To add insult to injury an Bosch engineer buddy of mine just told me that the Nissan GTR not only has a built in GPS Lap timer but is also rumored to have a "secret program" that raises the boost when the GPS (X and Y coordinates) sense that the car is at one of its predetermined list of race tracks. For example if the GPS senses it is at Tsukuba in Japan or the Ring in Germany it sharpens the car up. All that for $70K and for $100K we get a dask wart and a stalk to hit.

I love Porsche and I love the history and I am not saying I would sell it for a Nissan but they need to bloody sharpen up!

That's ok. My passenger does the shifting for me while I tap the stalk twice at 135 mph. It's all good.

Yes but rumor also has it that Nissan requires you to return the car for a tune up after each driving event. Rumored to cost $1200 each time :P
