Default 09 997 PCM

Just saw the new PCM on the Porsche web site and have to admit that I'm a bit impressed: touch screen, ipod integration, XM and XM traffic.

Anyone know if we'll be able to swap out an existing PCM for the 09 version? The one thing I really miss having in my p-car is xm integration.

does anyone have pics or know what the non-PCM equipped cars center stack will look like? couldn't find anything on the 911 "microsite" yet.

Unless Porsche makes a drastic change, PCM is standard on the 997 and 997S. Navigation, phone, logbook, etc. are options, but the basic PCM unit is standard.

I check with my dealer, he thought it would be very expensive to do the upgrade, but did not have more info yet

hadn't thought of that; here i am, having been shopping a cayman S for the past several weeks and it didn't occur to me the 911 had the screen standard. i guess that's why 911 owners have to pay extra for nav, which seems to amount to paying a grand or two for a DVD. nice!

Does anyone know if the phone option is still offered — the infamous Option 666? Or is phone function being handled by the blue-tooth interface now?

Also, what's up with the coin slot on the right? It's like expecting to hear:

"Please insert.....one.......dollar.......and.......twenty.......five......cents ........to complete this call."

Does the nav still work ***-backward? The first generation ones had you first select the city from among the thousands of cities in the U.S.

Most nav units today let you select the state first and then the city within the state. I hated that about the Porche nav unit.

The new Navi unit is Hard Drive based where the old was DVD. A lot quicker, and easier to use.

The "coin slot" also known as the SIM car slot is for european markets only. Its all looks for us. At least they gave us bluetooth

Too bad they didn't retain the previous SIM card interface, which was a hidden little tray that popped out when you pushed on it.

That coin slot is obnoxious and hideous!

Feel free to ask your local dealer but Id bet its cheaper to trade in your old car for a gen2 than it is to try to upgrade the PCM and all the associated cabling and systems too. The Nav, bose, speakers, USB and all the cabling from the old to new buttons and the centre trim - all are different and would need upgrading! Ouch, shudder at the thought of the overall cost.

Would be fun to find out how much - Id guess the cost would be at least $15,000 if it was even possible at all.

I'd be surprised if it was a cent over $5k.

I'm sure the new PCM/nav is better than the previous one but to attempt an upgrade to the new one would not be worth it. I'm sure it's possible. I think I'll just live with what I have. After all I did get a free upgrade to PCM 2.1 when my original one malfunctioned.
